V,'c presented a copy of the SFO Chronicle article and gave lion .".auto1 n posit ion on the article. NCR said 'it seemed provocative and some jumping to conclusions were apparent. Tnoy agreed that, nothing would be gained by Monsanto' s enter ing into h pu.O.ic controversy with the re porter on come of his statements. NCR were very grateful that we brought this to their attention. They w?mt to he ,:pt inforined of future developments. H V l COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL TRAN 009723 WATER PCB-SD0000004021 naming their paper as a source of pollution. Such an article' could play into the hands of 3-M's Action paper. V.'c then'got down to a discussion of the technical needs of the dye solvent. Tbc-re are two needs: (i) Aroclor 1<?'IS.' replacement in existing product;.;. (ii) Solvents for specialty requirements. NCR arc always anxious to find replacements for Aroclor lrklR to get a lower cost, second source of supply and lower odor. In the U. S,, NCR are now locked into a resin system for both the dye-encapsulated coating and the receiving paper coating. In the U. S., they hove switched from Altapulgus cloy. The resins now used arc PVi-l.dA (OAR) - KMA from PP&R is an alternative' - and a phenolic resin. In Japan, NCR will use an oosorbent clay. In the U. K., Wiggins Teape are still "leary" of a resin and they will probably stay on clay as they can get the Japanese material cheaper than NCR can in the U. S. As dye.. NCR is getting locked in on CVL clue to the shortage of d-phenyl phenol. Laucr was receptive to the idea of supplying screening tests and a sample of CVL for Monsanto pre-screen can didates to replace Aroclor 1?*I2. The two main screening tests are: . 1. Solubility in CVL Must be over l-l/2>5 Prefer over 3/* COMPANY 1 CONFIDENTIAL TRAN 009724 WATER PCB-SD0000004022 -3- o/s CVL in Aroclor If'lf is soluble for several weeks. The solubility must bo "stable" for months or even years. NCR in their tests prepare a super-soturated solution and leave it standing. In seven we cits, it levels off at the critical solubility level. 2. Tin- solvent effects the spued of reaction and inten sity of color produced wj th the resin on the receivin': paper. This is a fast test and NCR would test this ' thcinsc 1 ves. One additional drawback of Aroclor If-if with resin systems is that it contributes to print trade. This was not the case when Attapulgus clay was used. Of replacements for Aroclor tested, the following were nearest: a. Mono isopropyl biphenyl The "d'rawoacxs were: ~ price, non-availability and the solubility was not quite good enough although it doesn't coritrioute to print fade like Aroclor Ifdf. n . )ln- - IQ Tne print is too dull with l!D-4o and mono isopropyl biphenyl is oc.ttcr than HB-dO in this regard. c 8anl.lcl7.cr V'ly Thfif'fs labelled "interesting" and five gallons were ordered for fui'thcr tests TOP is being evaluated in a specialty grade of paper. We brought up Santicizer lyf. Although vie arc aware this has been killed,_NCR's world-wide usage of Aroclor lfdlf in i960 was 6.3 M pounds. If Soriticizcr 192 does the job, I am sure we would reconsider manufacture. Wc raised the point of the poor copies obtained with NCR paper compared to trie good copies now obtainable with ultra-thin, no smudge carbon papers. Laucr agreed on this but it seems that one answer lies in coating lighter papci's.
