Asbescos has been shown to be a hazardous material and we want it out of our plants as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we have been unable to develop a hard timetable to effect this changeover. First, there are the problems of developing a complete line of products to substitute for asbestos. Second, there has been a cost penalty associated with the asbestos-free materials, and some customers have resisted the change on that basis. . In the area of regulations, blue asbestos has already been banned. Further "outlawing" of asbestos seems unlikely, but regulations are almost certain to become more strict. These would include mandatory warning labels on cartons'of asbestos containing parts and a reduction in permissible air borne fibers from the current 2.0 fibers/cc to a .5 fibers/cc level. There has been a .2 fibers/ cc level proposed as the next step. Compliance to that level will.require major investments in filter systems, etc. by all who deal with asbestos. , Simply stated, our position is . We will eliminate asbestos as soon as possible. . Development of asbestos substitutes will continue until our complete line of materials is covered. . There will be no new development programs on asbestos containing materials.
