CWashington 6 f Minutes of Annual Meeting of Plastics Group June 3. 1954, White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. Attendance List Attached. The meeting was called to order at 8:30 p.m. with Mr. C. B. Branch in the Chair. Following introduction of member representatives attend' ing for the first time, the Chairman announced the new appointments to the Plastics Committee approved by the Board of Directors that morning. They are: Mr. R. K. Mueller, Monsanto Chemical Co.; Mr. T. J. Kinsella, . Barrett Division of Allied Chemical & Dye Corp.; and Dr. Leo Eckler of ; Celanese Corporation of America. He also called attention to the in- crease in membership of the Committee earlier this year through appoint ment of Mr. S. L. Brous of General Electric Co. and Dr. E. D. Rles of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. The two-year terms of Messrs. Roger S. Firestone and Harry M. Dent, Sr. on the Plastics Committee had expired and Mr. Branch expressed the appreciation of the entire Group for their services. BUYERS HANDBOOK PUBLICATION Sample of the booklet just coming off the press was shown during the meeting and members advised that 30>000 were being printed through t funds in the Financial Package for 1953-1954 operations. Also, as the l Group had decided a year ago, it is being distributed by the SPI to an extensive mailing list of approximately 18,000. An insert calling at tention to the Statement of Principles by the Plastics Industry and . asking for comments on the booklet will be used. CONFERENCE ON PLASTICS IN BUILDING This Conference being arranged in cooperation with the SPI and the National Research Council Is scheduled for October, 1954. A special ,, committee has already arranged a program covering all phases of the : building industry and the suggested speakers have been approached. All except the one who was to handle plywood have accepted their assignments. ^ Further information on the Conference will be supplied interested members ^ through bulletins well in advance of the meeting. I Plastics Group Annua- 'leeting June 3, 1954 Page 2 A statement on policy for the plastics Industry In recommending revisions of building codes had been forwarded to all Executive Repre sentatives and alternates. The small committee working on the build ing conference is also currently considering revisions of the San Fran cisco code, and a special meeting has been called for June 10 in Cleve land at which time a representative of the SPI Reinforced Plastics Divi r- sion Code Committee will be present. The materials manufacturers are vitally concerned that recommendations for code revisions from the plas b tics industry provide for all plastics where their use is indicated and & that the representatives of both MCA and SPI present a unified position to the code authorities. The scheduled meeting in Cleveland is aimed at ! this with respect to the San Francisco code. M.I.T. RESEARCH I* The Chairman called on Mr. R. K. Mueller of Monsanto Chemical Co. to present a brief report on the research program for the Technical Subcom fsi* mittee. A copy is attached to these minutes. In comments, Mr. Mueller emphasized that the Technical Subcommittee recommended continuance of the program for the coming year and the Plastics Committee in a recent meeting t had considered this as a part of the Financial Package and approved'same. f FINANCIAL PACKAGE 1954-1955 : The Chairman reviewed the report cleared to Executive Representatives ; showing results of special assessments in the past year and a proposed : budget and assessment program for 1954-1955 operations. Mem ber Executive Representatives and alternates were advised of the above in , a letter of May 19 from the MCA office. On motion duly seconded it was proposed that the Financial Package and assessment procedure be adopted by t the Plastics Group for the coming year'3 operations. This was voted unani- mously. Members' attention was called to the recently announced Federal Trade Commission rules regarding flammable fabrics and the activities of the National Fire Protection Association in testing fabrics and % plastics. MCA is represented on a committee of the N.F.P.A. * It now appears that this group will become active in testing of plastics which may be used for wearing apparel and that some comment I can be expected from certain fire marshals that the existing test does : not entirely rule out some pyroxylin treated materials. Steps have I been taken to enlist the aid of the SPI film group in the N.F.P.A. | committee activities.
