Walter, Davenport CONFIDENTIAL RE: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE COMMITTEE MEETING - JULY 1964 The July meeting of the Davenport Industrial Hygiene Committee was held in the small dining room of the Main Cafeteria on July 30, 1964. All members were present at the meeting. A. Noise in Scalper Area, Building 812 The noise dampening material for the ducts of the scalper chip conveying system is now on hand. It is 'planned to apply this to the ducts on August 8 and 9.. B. Sawing Marinite The Request for Authorization to provide equipment for sawing marinite is now circulating. This includes funds to provide dust collection facilities. "Ply" No. 9 was recommended by Dr. Shafer for use as a temporary protection against marinite dust. C. Coater House Fume Control The design work has now been completed for improvement of Sf 4869 800M'U41 MINTED IN U.6.A. ARD 044141 / Mr__W._F_._Kne.elan& July.....31j...1964 Sheet No. 2- - the fume control in the Coater House. The Request for Authorization to do this work is now in Pittsburgh. A report outlining the purpose of this Request for Authorization was forwarded by the Chairman to Mr. Bonney earlier this month. D. Areas Requiring Ear Protection The following is a list of the known areas where the noise level is above threshold limits, which apparently cannot be reduced by mechanical changes. Ear protection should be considered for these areas: 1 - Five stand continuous mill, Bldg. 814. 2 - At the Foil Heat Treat Furnace when the air quench is operating 3 - The #1 Slitter - Sheet Mill 4 - At the cold mills equipped with R-244 when the air knife is operating. 5 - #11 Trimmer - Foil Mill Mr. Wardrop has discussed the wearing of ear protection with the President of the local union. The response from him was reported as favorable. The Committee appointed at the last meeting to activate the audiometric program reported that ear protection would be provided in the above areas right away, but that the audiometric testing progra would be delayed 3-6 months while obtaining legal advice from our local attorneys. Some discussion concerning operating people briefly entering the pits under the cold mills for necessary cleaning out of metal as opposed to a prolonged entry by maintenance people brought out the question of how serious the oil fumes and gases might be in these areas. . r. ieia ARD 044142 TO. The elusiveness of definite symptoms of Petroleum Pneumonitis is a misleading factor concerning the hazards involved with mineral oil fumes It is hoped that Mr. Bonney will have some suggestions as to a suitable test method 'for these areas.
