Washington, D.C. 20460 Subject: Document Control Number 8EHQ-0383-0473 The McGill University study of the health effects of exposure to tremolite at the W. R. Grace Co. (Grace) mine and mill in Libby, Montana, has been completed. Actually, independent but cooperative studies were done by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Helath (NIOSH) and the McGill team which included Dr. J. C. McDonald, Dr. A. D. McDonald, and Dr. P. Sebastien. Combined results were presented verbally at a September 1985 conference on dust-related lung disease in Cambridge, England. The attached documents by the McGill team have recently been finalized and submitted to the British Journal of Occupational Medicine for publication. NIOSH has just completed their report and will be sending a copy directly to the EPA. Somewhat different techniques were used by the two study groups but the results were similar. The relatively small differences are explained in the attached McGill reports. We believe that these reports contain all informa tion requested in Frank B. Kover's letter of April 25, 1983. However, we can make members of the McGill team available for clarifications if necessary.
