Tha asbastos paper used in our spiral wound gaskats is pro duced with a binder which renders the gaskats safe for noraal handling and usaga. 2. As outlined in OAK Chapter 937, Sect. 115-040 (furnished by Bingham-Hilliamette), and in the enclosed excerpt froa the Federal Register, "Caution" labels are not required for products containing asbestos which is aanufactured with a binder, that prevents the release of airborne concentra tions of asbestos fibers in excess of prescribed exposure limits, during reasonably forseeabl* handling and use. 3. Plexitallic Gasket Company has conducted regular studies of respirable airborne asbestos exposure in our manufac turing operations. The results of these studies show re spirable airborne asbestos levels to b* well below OSHA prescribed limits. 4. He have enclosed a copy of OSBA fore 20, Material Safety Data Sheet, for your review. 5. Spiral wound gaskets are furnished as a complete assembly; there is no need for shaping, cutting, sawing, etc. In stallation of spiral wound gaskets involves lifting or pushing the old gasket off the flange, installing the new gasket and bolting up the flanges. Little or no cleanup of the flanges is required when replacing spiral wound gas kets. However, it is conceivable that an inexperienced in dividual would scrape or wire brush the flange faces. At least on* study has shown that this procedure does not create respirable airtx'-n* asbestos levels in excess of OSHA pre scribed limits.
