The first, called "The Rainbow Man" is an expose of Greenpeace and its operations. We have been advised by John Svalander of ECVM that the United Kingdom office of Greenpeace is taking legal action based on copyright infringement, so any use we make of the tape here in the U.S. should be "internal". See attached correspondence for more details. The second is from the UK series on television called "The Big Story" (a type of 60 Minutes) called the "Battle of The North Sea". It documents the Greenpeace effort to penetrate European chemical sites in order to obtain evidence of toxic discharges. It is not particularly harmful to PVC or even chlorine, but may give us a clue as to future "direct action" in North America. We are trying to get a copy of the video, but as yet, no one in our office has seen it. Since we haven't seen it, I'm working in the dark (Well, maybe not in the dark, but in a very dimly lit room.) Because of the recent NOAH meeting, the timeliness of the story is important. Would you help me with some of the issues and charges from the film? Specifically, we would like to know: 1) What charges can be substantiated as happening in the United States? (If most or all of the activity took place outside the US, we will just be aiming the story differently.) 2) Which is the most important issue, in your opinion: a)The bribery that went on to pack the IWC to secure a moratorium on whaling. b)The Greenpeace leadership skimming contributions, c) Greenpeace activists sitting in for official delegates. On November 15, 1993, Danish television aired a program alleging misconduct and possible criminal activity by Greenpeace and other environmental groups. Allegations were made linking the environmentalists to terrorist groups such as Earth First! and bribery involving government officials within the International Whaling Commission. The allegations and questions raised Include*. * Greenpeace raised millions of dollars and skimmed off money into personal accounts. Were personal taxes paid on these monies? * Greenpeace has supported the ecoterrorlst group Earth First! which takes credit for spiking trees and acts of sabotage. * Greenpeace worked with other environmental groups, Including the World Wildlife Fund, to bribe officials with the International Whaling Commission in order to enact a moratorium of whaling against the prevailing scientific evidence which stated that such drastic measures were unnecessary. Gudmundsson is known for Ws films, "Survival In the High North* and "Reclaiming Paradise?" Both films are highly critical of the tactics and results of the Greenpeace campaigns. Gudmundsson was moved to investigate Greenpeace and its tactics after he met an old Icelandic fisherman weeping after the burial of his son, a sealer who had committed suicide. "He saw no hope," said the old man to the young film maker. The man saw Greenpeace as the demon behind the campaign that ruined the reputations and the economies of the independent people of the Arctic regions, people who depended on whaling, sealing and fishing for their way of Ufe. Gudmundsson spent the following years tracking Greenpeace, its financial dealings and talking with the targets ofdie various "Save the \Vhale," "Save the Dolphin," "Save the Seal" campaigns. He has been sued by Greenpeace for libel over and over. New Zealand T.v, called him the "Green Buster." This year, stories on Gudmundsson allegation? have surfaced In North America, most recently in the Washington Times and the Vancouver Province.
