The purpose of this report is to reviev the problea of handleability
sod to set forth criteria ageiost vhich XS7I0 sod competitive produets
cay be compared in the future. See Test Report 20745 (22/28/60) for
vork done leading to this study.
.
P.ICO^'.SKDRTIOKS:
It is recooaeade<t that the ball iapact test be used ss a handleability eeasurisg devise. For 1-1/2" thick block or 3~z 1-1/2" pipe covering a criteria of 24 isches to the first crack (avg. of 5 pieces) should be the minimus for a* acceptable material.
.
It is also appareot froo this study that dustiness is a oajor factor in evaluating the handleability or pleasantness of an Industrial insulation. Because of this dust problem, a sethod sust be developed to evaluate the aaount of dust on a gives sasple. It is reeoor.ended that the Product Testing'Laboratories start this investigation as soon as possible.............. -
Tbe Handleability Index ^Modulus of Resilience divided by deoslty - see
T. R. 20745 for details) also appears to be a good aeasure of handleability,
but it is auch aore tlse-consusing than the ball lapact test. This aetbod
is applicable only to block. Aa acceptable 1-1/2" thick block should have
an Index no less than 20 in. The block tested for this report will be cut
dovn to 1" thick to determine the effect of a different thickness on the
test data. *

BASPLSlSiUTY PA.V5I:
Oa February 7, a stating vas held at tbe Berlin Plut to evaluate subjec
tively tb* following products:

.
Keasbey L Uattlson Eaytherc
Philip Carey Calcius Silicate Block (vhich is Kaytbers purchased
fros Z L U)
Of these products, all are calciua silicates vitb tbe exception of Unibestos and Careyteop. Sarples consisted of cartons of 1-1/2" thick block, 3'* x 1" pipe covering, 3M x 1-1/2" pipe covering, 6" x 1" pipe covering, and 10" x 1-1/2" pipe covering.
Tbe following people cosprised the panel:

C. L. Kalousek
YiHiaa A. Lozz
J, B. Rhoads
.
E. C. Shusan
H. V. Sslth
2 union cesbers of the Insulators local in Philadelphia
(J. D. Siskins evaluated tbe saterials after they arrived at Granville.)
Tbe panel defined good handleablllty as follovs:
1
"A product tbat Is able to vithstand Dorsal abuse during shipping and application." Workability - east of fabricating - also plays * a part in handleabillty. It vas agreed that tbe sajor problec. boiled dovn to producing a saterial vlth high ispact resistance.
Each sesber of the panel filled in a data fora (Insulation Handleabillty Data, sacple fora attached) after conducting blx ovn aanual tests of a given saterial. He rated the product 1 to 5 according to bis personal opinion based on tbe handling tests. These tests consisted of dropping the saterial on tbe floor, feeling, euttlcg, saving, breaking tbe Insulation vlth bis bands, etc. Tbe aasples vere then shipped to P.T.Ll.
for testier. *
Tbe.panel rated the saterials as follovs:

In sussarising the panel rations, the following ltess are of Interest:
1. Eaeb panel serber rated various saterlals froa good to bad, tbat is, nobody rated all saterlals average, ete.
2. There was good agreement that J-M Tbersobestos was the best caterial.
3. There was good agreement that Z L 11 Eaytherm: was the worst product evaluated.
4. The widest variation In opision was on Ur.ibestos (1 to 5). The produets that ba an average rating generally bad tbe wider variation in opinion (P.. T. Sage states this is typical In surveys).
In reviewing tbe test data, It is noted that the sodulus of rupture has
no correlation with the handleability rating of tbe panel. Strength
tests do not give the complete story, as cat. be seen la tbe suanary of
panel sembers*consents. ltess such as appearance and dustiness affected
tbe ratings.
.
Although the P.uberold material generally bad better strength than Xaylo, it rated slightly lower probably costly due to the relative dustiness of tbe two plus tbe presence of air boles in.tbe Ruberoid Caleilite. .............
Two of the B.-E.-H. Thesasll saaples and two of the X l H laytherm sasples arrived at Granville so badly broken they eould not be tested. This is quite significant,as resistance to shipping damage was defined as one of tbe major facets of handleability. Incidentally, these two products were rated lowest by tbe panel.
I/
T. *. 206S2-1
One unexplained aspect of tbe survey is that tv aaterlals (2Laylo sod Calsilltc) vbicb vere rated high by tbe panel bad relatively poor biocicg.end Xaytbeno (rated lovest) va* ajeont tbe best in binging.
T^e attached coasents by the panel oeabers provide an interesting Insight into tbe probless of evaluating bandleabil1ty.
