issue of The American Journal

apy and Nuclear Medicine that
asbestos .fibers breathed into
human lungs cause asbestosis. a
long-term disease which can be
/ fatal. >
It is- further, suspected, they
" said, that -asbestosis increases
cancer of the lungs. '

chance of destroying the fiber

in the hing tissue.

to subdivide almost endlessly
and the ability to reproduce new
asbestos bodies.
Patients Studied
They studied '47 patients with
malignancy believed resulting
from asbestosis. Most had long
exposure to .asbestos varying
/ from IS to 25 yean.-
In Philadelphia. 197 asbestos
**.*, workers in various insulating
trades* were examined.
Both in Somerville and Phila
delphia studies point out the dis-
f * ease may be a public health
' hazard. Signs of asbestosis have
