VANDERBILT COMPANY 1. At your req u est, I was able to contract time on the P h ilip s 200 electron microscope at Denver Research In s titu te to confirm by selected area d iffra ctio n p attern s, the presence o f ch ry so tile , an thophylllte and trem olite in a l l the R. T. Vanderbilt ta lc s designated K y ta l'200, Nytal'itGO, Asbestine 3X, and Asbestine 325a (please re fe r to my l e t t e r o f October 9 , 197^, which is based b a s ic a lly on FDA o p tic a l methods and the use o f our RCA electron microscopes to confirm c h r y s o tile ) . I t was f e l t th at selected area d iffra ctio n patterns o f the asbestos minerals using the P h ilip s 200 would lend p o sitiv e Id e n tific a tio n - & type o f an alysis which cannot be done on our RCA EMI/-3B model. 2. Table No. 1 not only id e n tifie s samples, but also id e n tifie s a l l Tr*M p rin ts and selected area d iffr a c tio n patterns o f the 33 prints attached to th is l e t t e r . The TEM plates are always on f i l e . The microscope constant (L A) was derived by averaging 21 microscope constant values based on lin e s o f Au and Pd. The microscope constant is : To ca lcu la te d-spacing in Angstrom u n it s , the follow ing formula was used: L A (A cm) spot p a ir radius (cm) 3. C h r y s o tile , a n th o p h y llite , and trem olite were a l l found in each o f the four R. T. Vanderbilt t a lc samples. P a rticu la r data fo r each sample are found in Table No. 3 end appropriate attached electron diffraction patterns.
