Dear Mr. Flynn: In view of your letter of December 2 and Mr. iiayior 'a of December 3, it seems wise at this time to clarify our position in relation to the case of alleged lead poisoning at Thermopolis, "Wyoming. Cur first contact with this case came about in April of 1945 when a Dr. Donald II. 0 `Bourke of Denver wrote me about the condition of this man, without at that time mentioning his name or indicating just where tne question had arisen. What he wanted to know was the possible relationship between lead exposure from the handling of leaded gasoline and loss of vision from bilateral optic atrophy. I replied promptly and apparently satisfactorily, since I heard no more about the matter. Subsequently some time in July of 1945, Dr. fenders told me of having visited Judge Metz of Thermopolis, Wyoming with Mr. J. f . Cole at the request of Judge Mets, for some discussion of this case. Nothing more serious than an expression of opinion from Dr. Sanders to Judge Mets seemed to be Involved at that time. Later, on January yj, 1946, I had a letter from Dr*. B. B. ieeve, Medical Director of Standard Oil Company ^Indiana), enclosing a copy of a letter from a garage owner In Thermopolis, Wyoming to a district manager of Standard in Cheyenne, together with a long letter from C. W. Axtell, attorney fox* the City of Thermopolis, Wyoming. This letter from Thermopolis gave a great deal of detailed information about the claim, representing the best, account of the entire situation that had come to my attention. Dr. F.eeve raised ,....<* a series of questions to which I replied in a letter dated February 19, 1946. Again I had no further word from Dr. reeve and so did - not take any further action in the matter. On November. 2u, 1946 I had a further letter from Dr. Feeve, saying that Mr. Axtell had received a copy of my letter and had asked permission to use it In the trial of the case, which was supposed to come up within a short time. I gave approval for the use of the letter, and since that time have had no further information about the case from either Dr. Ieeve or Mr. Axtell. Further reference to the case appeared in certain weekly letters, and finally in the letter from Mr. Iiayior and yourself referred to above.
