The Facts about GenX and Teflon
1. TeflonTM is not the same as GenX. TeflonTM is a brand owned by Chemours. It is not a product nor a material. The TeflonTM brand is used to market a range of products and is not a generic name for non-stick cookware coatings.
2. GenX, or C3 dimer acid, is a polymerization processing aid used by Chemours in the manufacturing process of fluoropolymers. Once the polymerization process is complete, a large part of the processing aid is recovered and recycled, whereas the remainder is disposed.
3. Fluoropolymers enabled by GenX are used in a wide variety of products that enable modern life, address societal challenges, and provide significant societal benefits. a. Making aerospace and automobile travel safer, more affordable, and more environmentally friendly. b. Helping lower energy consumption by enabling renewable energy installations and fostering environmental safety in the chemical and power sectors. c. Improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions in cars. d. Enabling the cell phones and smart tablets we all use every day. e. Reducing the risk of equipment failures, infections, and unnecessary medical procedures.
4. GenX is registered under REACH regulation since 2009, following extensive health and safety testing, allowing for use in the EU.
5. GenX levels are significantly below the level of safety determined by the authorities.
6. Chemours is working to abate 99% of air and water emissions of GenX by the end of 2020, and at least 80% of all organic fluorinated compound emissions by 2023, towards a goal of 99% overall.
