Tha CMaCla is raaoved and savad and two additional CHaCla extractiona ara nada of tha watar and contained with tha original CBaCla axtract. This axtract containad a considarabla aaount of banxyl alcohol and bantaldohyda. Thasa coapounda wara removed by solvant exchanging tha CHaCla to IS at aethanol. Tha aethanol was ex tracted three tines with 10 aL portions of haxana and thasa hexane fractions wars combined and partionad against 50 nl of watar followed by 100 nL of concentrated sulfuric acid. Tha hexane layer was dried over anyhydrous sodiua sulfate and concentrated to 2 aL.
The concentrate was applied to tha top of a nultiphasa colixan containing (top to botten) 2 g of silica, 4 g of silica plus 404 sulfuric acid, 1 g of silica, 2 g of silica plus 344 potassiun hydroxide and finally 1 g of silica. The coluan was eluted with 50 aL of hexane with tha eluant going directly onto a coluan con taining 2.5 graas of Moela basic aluadna. This coluan was first olutad with 10 aL of 24 CHaCla/hexane to raaova PCb's and this fraction was discarded. Tha coluan was than eluted with 15 aL of 504 CBaCla/hoxane and this fraction was saved and concantratad to 10 tl in a keeper of dodecane and subaittad for GC/ns analysis.
The OC/MS analysis was carried out on a Hewlett Packard S5ISB GC/MB systaa with tha gas chrcastorgraphlc separations on a 50 aster SP-2330 capillary colwn. Tha anas spactroaeter was operated in

the hIuM ion Monitoring node following Ions characterlatic of tho tcor'a and the aurrog-ttea that vara uaad. Ouantltatlon waa achieved by ratiolng tha aaount of 21TI-TC0P In tho aanple to tha aaount of "c-237l-TCDr which had boon addad to tha watar at tha vary outaat of tha extraction procedure. Thia laotopically labeled aurrogate provldaa for accurata quantitation even though tha actual recovery of tha TCor'a can be quite variable. Tha raaulta of tho analyaaa are ahown in Table 1. Included in tha table are tha raaulta from tha apiking atudiaa in which native (non-iaotopleally labeled) TCDF waa addad to the aaaiplee.

100ML OF EACH SAMPLE HAS DIGESTED WITH HOT HN03 AS OUTLINED INI EPA METHODS FOR CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER AND WASTES PART 4.1.3 TOTAL RECOVERABLE METALS AFTER DIGESTION. THE TREATED SAMPLE WAS RETLMCD TO ITS ORIGINAL VOLUME.
INSTRUMENTAL METHOD:
