If you'd like any more information, including any country-specific releases, do just let me know. Very best, Jenny PRESS RELEASE: Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2018 Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA Tier 13 ED 002061 00008210-00009 UNDER STRICT EMBARGO UNTIL 13:01 BRASILIA TIME / 12:01 SANTIAGO DE CHILE TIME / 17:01 LONDON UK TIME ON WEDNESDAY 18TM JULY 2018 NOT FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE THAT TIME Venezuela struggles to compete in prestigious Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings 2018 #THELatAm #THEunirankings Country experiences decline in 2018 table amid increased regional competition, with two institutions ranked, down from three last year Expanded 2018 ranking spans 10 nations across Latin America and the Caribbean; includes 49 first-time entrants; Brazil dominates, claiming a third of all places and six of the top 10; Chile retains position as second most represented nation; Peru stages a comeback; Jamaica features for the first time But while Brazil dominates ranking, THE's most comprehensive analysis of region yet reveals fuller picture of regional excellence: Ecuador top country for research influence and international outlook; Argentina best for teaching environment VENEZUELA has declined in this year's Times Higher Education (THE) Latin America University Rankings, amid increased regional competition. The only country with fewer representatives than last year, its two ranked universities both fall in the 2018 table. The nation drops from three ranked institutions to two this year.* Simn Bolvar University falls from the 26-30 banding but clings to this year's top 40 at number 39, while the country's University of the Andes falls from the 46-50 band in 2017 to the 61-70 grouping this year. Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA Tier 13 ED 002061 00008210-00010 Argentina overtakes Venezuela to become the fifth most represented country in the 2018 ranking, with seven institutions included, up from two in 2017, all of which feature in the top 60. THE's 2018 ranking spans 10 nations across Latin America and the Caribbean - up from eight last year, as Peru re-joins the ranking and Jamaica features for the first time. 129 institutions are included, up from 82 last year - with 49 first-time entrants, leading to increased regional and national competition. Brazil dominates the 2018 table - claiming six of the top 10, including the elite top two. The country has 43 universities represented in this year's expanded table - a third of all positions up from 32. Its State University of Campinas (Unicamp) ranks number one for a second year, while the University of Sao Paulo - which retains second place - tops the table for research. Chile retains its status as the second most represented nation, with 26 universities, up from 18. Mexico remains the third most represented country in this year's ranking with 22 institutions represented, up from 13 last year; Peru stages a comeback: the country was represented in 2016 but its only institution featured then, the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, was not ranked in 2017 due to insufficient provision of data. This year however, Peru has three institutions represented, topped by the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru at number 18; Colombia is the fourth most represented in this year's ranking with 19 institutions represented, up from 11 last year. Argentina overtakes Venezuela to become fifth most represented, with seven institutions included, up from two in 2017 - all in the top 60; Ecuador has five institutions represented in this year's table, up from two; however, both its previously ranked institutions decline; Jamaica features for first time in the ranking. The University of the West Indies breaks into the Top 40, at number 37, and is ranked fourth in the table for its international outlook. Costa Rica has one university represented, as it did last year. But while Brazil dominates the ranking, THE's most comprehensive analysis of the region yet - looking at countries' performance as a whole, based on their median pillar scores - reveals a more nuanced picture of regional excellence. The analysis shows that Ecuador is the top-performing Latin American country when it comes to its universities' research influence and international outlook, closely followed by Chile.** Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA Tier 13 ED 002061 00008210-00011 But Argentina comes top for teaching environment, followed by Brazil, while Chile and Ecuador fare poorly. Brazil is top for research environment, with Argentina close behind. Phil Baty, Editorial Director of Global Rankings for THE, said: "Venezuelan universities are feeling the country's economic crisis deeply, with cuts to teaching activities, and rising numbers of students and teachers leaving the sector orfleeing the country altogether. Economic and political strains are being felt in other countries across Latin America, inevitably damaging the performance and attractiveness of the region's universities on the global stage - and jeopardising their rich potential. "However, also clear is the resilience and ambition of the region's universities in the face of such challenges - their continued drive to increase guality and serve their nations' needs." He added: "We need to see more Venezuelan universities embracing global data comparisons to help them develop, improve and compete regionally, and worldwide. We work in full cooperation with universities and share our analysis and insights to help them develop in the best wayfor them. I very much hope more will get involved so that we can work alongside them and help them achieve their goals."
