April 1, 1976 LOUISIANA DIVISION PLAQUENIINE* LOUISIANA 70764 Wallace Vossberg Cell Service CELL SERVICE PERSONNEL EXPOSURE TO DERAKANE Cell Service employees are being exposed to some organic vapors.when using Derakane to seal rebuilt chlorine cells. During the mixing and pouring process, employees are exposed to styrene vapors given off by the Derakane. The pouring process usually takes about 2 hours and is normally done once a day. A portable hydrocarbon analyzer was used on site to measure the styrene levels during the entire operation. The highest concentration detected in the employee's breathing range was 50 ppm (v). Styrene concentration directly over the freshly poured mixture was approximately 75 ppm (v). The TLV for styrene is 100 ppm. If an employee is exposed to 60 ppm for 2 hours, his time-weighted average for an 8 hour day is 15.0 ppm (v). Normal safety precautions should be observed when handling Derakane.
