Williams Asbestos Monitoring in Storeroom, 511 Construction Department Dear Mr. Proffitt: On May 9, 1983, the Technical Center Industrial Hygiene group conducted a monitoring survey for determining the exposure of employees to asbestos dust particles while handling asbestos containing gaskets in the storeroom at the 512 Construction Department. This work was done by M. E. Bell of our group. Mr. J. H. White was monitored for asbestos exposure when he received one hundred asbestos spiral-wound gaskets in three bundles. During the monitoring period, Mr. White removed these gaskets from the box, counted and placed them in a storage bin in the storeroom. Mr. White wore a dust respirator approved for asbestos while performing the job. In addition to the personal sample, an area sample was also collected. The results of monitoring shown in the attachment indicate that exposure to asbestos fibers above the permissible exposure limit of 2 fiber/cc are unlikely. It is our observation that while unpacking and placing gaskets in the bin the probability of exposure is minute; however, it is believed that once the gaskets are stored in the bin some dust will become loose due to friction and may build up over a period of time. We recommend that the gasket storage bin be cleaned once every month. The person cleaning the bin should wear a dust res pirator. The method of cleaning the bin should be wet. The easiest way would be to rinse the bin with water in the sink. Please notify Mr. White of his exposure results. If we can UCC 024502 R. C.
