Because of a government order allocating castor oil derivatives, it became necessary to consider replacement* for para soap (N-39) and turkey red oil (B-75). This report covers the substitutes which aero studied In the laboratoiy and plant in the BOS Beds and Maroon Group.
Of the agents tried, none was observed to give an exaot tinctorial matoh for the standard. In seme oases, products stronger than standard were obtained, but net without changes in masstone depth and/or hue. It is conceivable that by combining Borne of these agents with other variables, OX straight qualitymight be attained. Also, an additional souroe nf process variables is indicated, because of the pronounced effect on color exerted by some of these agents.
(Mssion of agent entirely, is not recommended, due to the adverse effect on texture and color.
Direct substitutions of the para soap and turkey red oil were made on an equal weight basis in the standard formulas. The following agents were employed* Diatoline (N-J^l), potassium laurate (H-35B), Petronate (N-490), K wood rosin (H-239) and textile finishing oil (H-717). Tinctorial comparisons of laboratory material, as determined by varnish drier rubout, wars made against the respective standards and are described as follows}
1) BOB Bed Baric RT-525-D (2B Acid - BON/Mn) Petronate and textile finishing oil both yielded darker masstone*, higher
strength and yellowness. Rosin and potassium laurate gave lifter masetonee and in the case of rosin, blueness. Material made with dletollne was light in masstone, slightly weak and blue.
2) BOS Maroon Bark, ET-521-D (TOB * BOH/ifa) The Bistoline and potassium laurate products both were on the light side
in masstone and strong in tint. Petronate supplied a slight gain in strength and yellowness. Basin and textile finishing oil saoh contributed to masstone depth and weakness.
3) BOR Maroon Medium BT-347-D (TOB ** BON/Mn) Petronate and potassium laurate both gave slightly darker and stronger
material) in addition, a yellow tint wa|| obtained with the Petronate. Textile finishing oil and rosin yielded material which was dark in masstone and weak. Material made with Bistoline showed a loss in strength*
m4) Maroon Light BT-533-B (PCAI^ * BGR^fa) Textile finishing oil and rosin both provided greater masstone depth# higher strength and yellowness. Petronate material was equal in masstone depth# dull, slightly strong and yellow. DtstoUne and potassium laurate each yielded a slightly darker, strong and mors yellow product.
Evaluations made by 24 hour ball milling revealed color values similar to those described for the varnish drier method. Overstripe bleed test revealed no deficiencies for any of the agents.

the KT-525-D process were made employing textile finishing oil and Petronate in plaoe of the para soap* Of the two batches made with textile finishing oil, one lot ms light and dull in nasetone, slightly weak and yellow coopered to standard, the other being ws dark, slightly weak and yellow vs standard* batches were manufactured with the accessory agent, OTHSA reduced froia the amount of 3*6# to 2#* The Petronate lot was very dark, slightly strong, yellow and intense against standard* The normal 3.6# of 0T3JSA was used*
