Zt is interesting to speculate on what may have happened to bring this about, but it is none the leas advantageous whatever may be the facts behind it. No good can come from a greater show of public controversy. I sliall be very glad to follow your suggestion in the matter of my presentation, and will submit a brief statement shortly. If this brings forth questions, I shall be prepared to answer them, but if what is presented orally and in documented, written form is satisfactory for the purposes of the Committee, I'll be glad to let it rest there. Kehoe College of Medicine University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, Ohio Dear Dr. Kehoe: Gillis Long and Davis Batson have had information from several different sources that the Muskie Committee will limit its hearings on lead to a single day, probably during the third week in May. While we cannot be certain, of course, that the hearings will be deemphasized in such a favorable manner, we all feel that our present information is reliable enough to require us to prepare for a very short presentation. Accordingly we believe that the oral presentations to be made by you and George Kirby should be condensed even further. Our best information at present is that no witness should expect to take more than 15 minutes in making his oral statement to the Committee. I am now in the process of cutting back George Kirby*s statement to accommodate this time limteation. We believe the same limitation must be observed in the case of your oral statement. Knowing the impossibility of sum marizing in 15 minutes the lifetime of work you have done in con nection with lead, we feel it will be necessary to let your formal, written statement to be filed with the Committee be your principal contribution to the hearing. This statement is already in excellent form, and will be backed up by the bound volumes of your papers that we will also file. Kehoe - 2- April 6. 1966 Insofar as your oral presentation is concerned, it seems to us that it should be a brief summary or condensation of the formal statement to be filed. In this oral presentation you might simply highlight the more important points in the formal statement and give a hard hitting summary of its conclusions. Unfortunately, this alternative approach would necessitate the abandonment of your last draft and of the several charts that we understand are being . prepared for the hearing. While this is troublesome and causes more work for all of us, it certainly will be justified if we can help shorten the hearing to a single day. We will be in touch with you as soon as we have any additional information concerning the procedure to be followed at the hearings.
