MINUTES MANUFACTURING AND AIMING COMMITTEE SHERATON-BlACKSTONE HOTEL CHICAGO, ILLINOIS April 3, 1373 Mr. W. W. AIR AND WATER POLLUTION Chairman Holloway briefly reviewed the current Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) Gypsum Industry Air Emission Study being conducted by Process Research, Inc., of Cincinnati, Ohio. Secretary Rogers noted that E.P.A. and Process Research representatives toured the two Shoals, Indiana plants in addition to operating facilities at Stony Point, New York and Buchanan, New York as part of their study. Mr. Rogers stated that on March 2, he had visited with Mr. Richard Atherton, Environmental Protection Agency, and that Mr. Atherton indicated the report covering air emission in our industry was in the final stages of preparation and should be ready for release sometime later this month. Mr. Rogers indicated that a copy of this final re port would be forwarded upon completion to the Gypsum Association and that he in turn would forward copies to the committee membership. Mr. Rogers noted, based on Mr. Atherton's comments, that he thinks the report will contain a generally favorable analysis of our industry's pep, ex. no. Asbestos Dust - Joint Compound The committee reviewed the Technical Committee and Safety Committee recommendations that the Gypsum Association initiate studies of asbestos to determine tne hazards that result from mixing and finishing operations with joint compound treatments. Secretary Rogers noted that $3,000 had been placed in the Technical Committee buoget to conduct tests in this area. Hr. Zimmerman briefly commented on the asbestos standards, noting that new revised E.P.A. standards are presently under consideration and that recommendations for the Associa tion to initiate study in this area should be passed immediately ard that such evaluative studies should be conducted in three or four loca tions throughout the country to subject the product to different environ mental conditions. Following much discussion, on motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Manufacturing and Mining Committee recom mended to the Board of Directors that a study be initiated immediately to determine the asbestos content in mixing and application operations only after the objectives of this study are clearly defined. This subject was carried on the agenda. Prior to adjournment, Hr. H. B. Carlsen, Secretary of the Technical Committee, briefly reported that the Technical Committee recommended that fire barrier gypsum board should be labeled as complying with ASTM Standard C-707-72T. This subject is net to remain on the agenda, but is noted only as a point of information. 11.
