Krummrich plant held a press conference this morning to announce the recent receipt of a permit to burn tire derived fuel, a mixture of coal and shredded tire chips. The plant announced it expects to burn the equivalent of 500,000 tires during the remainder of 1991, at a current mixture ratio of 80% coal to 20% tire chips. The press conference was well attended, with all three network affiliates (KTVI, KMOV, KSDK) present, along with the Post-Dispatch, UPI, Metro East papers, and a photographer from MCCommentary. A KMOX Radio interview was conducted after the conference. Bill Boyle, plant manager, and Dan Dennis, utilities business unit leader, provided remarks on behalf of Monsanto. The Illinois EPA and Department of Energy and Natural Resources provided their respective managers of the tire project to participate in the conference. Both of the agency representatives were very pleased with the Monsanto project and made that clear to the press. There were no evident problems during the course of the conference, and the press had ample opportunity to interview the participants and take photos/video.
