Be sure that all equipment is in good working condition, with rods unscored, in alignment, free from shoulders, vibration, tilting and other imperfections. It is well established that a slight drip is prefer able when in operation. To accomplish this, it may be necessary to periodically loosen gland nuts. 2. Use lantern glands wherever possible, thereby providing constant lubrication. This will pro long the life of the packing, reduce friction and save wear on rods and shafts. 3. When applying new packing, remove the old packing from the stuffing box in its entirety. 9. Store packing stocks in a cool, dry place. 10. Rolls of sheet packings should be placed on roll-racks, and flat sheets laid on horizontal racks. 11. Keep all packings free from dirt and grit under all circumstances. 4. Do not spiral-wind packing around rod or shaft. Cut into individual rings, using butt joint on braided types; bevel joint on rubber and duck, and either bevel or step joint on fine white hydraulic for inside packed piston pumps. 5. On the initial "warm-up", lubricate the rod or shaft freely. 6. On rings with joints, stagger the joints at least 45. 7. Tamp each ring "home" with a suitable tool. GASKETS 12. Make a good sealing surface by cleaning flanges thoroughly. 13. Flange faces musl not be warped as a proper joint requires equal compression over the entire surface. 1-1. l ighten holts evenly, doing so on directly opposite bolts until the gasket is tight. Draw up again in the same manner after the first few hours of service. 8. After stuffing box is filled, draw up firmly and evenly on the gland; then back off the gland nuts, re-tightening them to finger pressure only. 15. Use thin gauge thickness where application is perfect; where flanges are pitted, use material of greater thickness, as conditions warrant. THE BELMONT PACKING & RUBBER CO. Center block is pleated on itself (accordion fashion) at an angle of approximately 90 degrees with the rod, thus affording, among others, the fol lowing advantages: 1 High degree of resiliency and flexibility. 2 Abundance of take-up on the gland as the packing wears in service--with the packing flowing toward the rod. 3 Ultimate "edge wear1' on the block in the event the rod surface of the packing wears down to the block. "Edge wear'' implies "long wear." ^ CONSTRUCTION: Made from closely woven asbestos cloth frictioned with a heat-resisting rubber compound. The cen ter asbestos block is made by folding the cloth upon itself. The rubber cushion is compounded to remain resilient when subjected to extreme temperatures. Always furnished lubri cated and graphited unless otherwise specified. Rubber back supplied on all packing spaces from 7/16" upward; %" with rubber center; smaller sizes without rubber hack or center. APPLICATION: High pressure steam rods, expansion joints, air and gas. Should this be impeded, wearing and scoring will result. Friction and wear are minimized by our method of impregnating lubri cants and graphiting each strand of asbestos yarn in the process of braiding this packing. CONSTRUCTION: Long fibre asbestos yarn, braided square in the same manner as in braided flax packings. Each strand of yarn is lubricated and graphited, resulting in a thoroughly lubricated product. Supplied in packing space sizes ya" and upward. APPLICATION: Centrifugal and rotary shafts working against steam, water, oil and weak acids; in fact, can be con sidered as a standard packing for all types of centrifugal and rotary conditions, as well as oscillating rods. BELMONT CENTRIFUGAL and ROTARY PUMP PACKING Square Braided Cotton Packing Here is a braided asbestos air compressor rod packing featur ing a braid over braid construction, with each jacket lubri cated and graphited. This packing will retain its flexibility under the intense heat encountered in air compressor rod applications. These basic features, in combination with finest quality materials, make Belmont 758, 759 and 760 a desirable choice for this type of service. CONSTRUCTION: Long fibre asbestos yarn, each strand thoroughly lubricated and graphited throughout. This pack ing is square in cross section. Supplied in packing space, sizes %" and upward. APPLICATION: Air compressor rods where lubricated packing is desired. Ring-Belmont 550 On centrifugal and reciprocating types of pumps, where the temperatures are not in excess of 250 F.. Belmont Square Braided Cotton Packing is recommended against the liquids noted below. The softness of this thoroughly lubricated and graphited product is a desirable feature, assuring free motion and minimum wear. It can be supplied with special lubri cants for pumps handling edible products and paper stock. CONSTRUCTION: Cotton thread square braided. Each strand lubricated and graphited before braiding. Sup plied in packing space sizes %" and upward. APPLICATION: Centrifugal and rotary shafts working against hot and cold water and brine. Also used against cold oil. For E very Service 3 BELMONT SQUARE BRAIDED ASBESTOS PACKING Wire Inserted P4CX/#eS BELMONT BLUE ASBESTOS ACID PACKING Spiral-Belmont 753 Certain steam reciprocating rod applications require a pack ing rather soft in consistency and lubricated and graphited throughout. This is particularly true in stuffing boxes of ex pansion joints. This packing has all these features plus the fact that the asbestos yarn is twisted with fine wire, giving added strength. Every strand is impregnated with lubrication and covered with graphite. Hence, the packing retains its soft ness over a long period of use. CONSTRUCTION: Long fibre asbestos yarn, with a fine copper wire twisted with each strand of yarn. Braided square in the same manner as in braided flax packings. Each strand of metallic yarn is lubricated and graphited, resulting in a thoroughly lubricated finished packing. Supplied in space sizes %" and upward. APPLICATION: Reciprocating rods and plungers against high pressure steam, expansion joints, air, gas, oil, and header valves. Also used in combination with other styles where constant lubrication is desired- BELMONT LEAD INSERTED SQUARE BRAIDED ASBESTOS PACKING Coil--Belmont 6731-C One of the natural characteristics of crude blue asbestos fibre, mined in Africa, is that it resists acids to a higher de gree than asbestos fibre from other parts of the world. This is the African fibre that is spun into yarn and used in the manufacture of Belmont Blue Asbestos Acid Packing. In the process of braiding, the yarn is treated thoroughly with a special lubricant and graphited. resulting in a packing that will properly serve on centrifugal shafts and reciprocating rods handling acids and alkalis. CONSTRUCTION: Manufactured from blue African asbes tos yarn, square braided like flax and thoroughly impreg nated with lubricant and graphited. Furnished lubricated unless ordered dry. Supplied in packing space size6 Yg" and upward. APPLICATION: Centrifugal shafts, reciprocating rods and valve stems handling strong acids, caustic soda and other alkalis. BELMONT BRAIDED ASBESTOS PACKING Square Cross Section Ring--Belmont 6731-R Belmont Lead Inserted Square Braided Asbestos Packings as formed in this construction provides an ideal sealing agent against hot and cold water when used on the applications listed below. Thoroughly' lubricated and surface graphited this combina tion of square braided asbestos inserted w ith these soft metal wires forms a firm pliable packing which offers flexibilitycoupled with outstanding resistance tp friction. CONSTRUCTION: This is a square braided packing of asbestos yarn and soft metal wire. It is thoroughly- lubricated and surface graphited; furnished in sizes Y" to 1 '`v'\" in steps of Xs " APPLICATION: Used on shafts of centrifugal and rotary pumps and valve stems operating against hot and cold water. Friction is reduced due to the lead wire. Spiral-Belmont 744 The braid over braid method used in the making of this packing "locks in" the lubricant and graphite with which each strand of asbestos yarn is impregnated. Being square in cross section, the stuffing box becomes completely filled, requiring little gland pressure to seal against uses for which this construction is intended. This is a strong, flexible pack ing, frequently used in combination with other styles where the features of a thoroughly lubricated product are desired. It can be supplied with wire insertion under special order. CONSTRUCTION: Long fibre asbestos yarn, braided jacket over jacket, each strand thoroughly lubricated and graph ited. The finished product is square in cross section. Sup plied in packing space sizes 1/g" and upward. APPLICATION: High pressure steam piston rods; expan sion joints, gas, oil, and some chemicals. 4 For Every Service BEl4fO#r BELMONT VALVE STEM PACKING Braided-Belmont 610--Twisted-Belmont 740 BELMONT HOT OIL ASBESTOS PACKING Braided Asbestos These two types of valve stem packings fill the small joh re quirements, where packing spaces are small--such as stems of valves, pump rods, pump valve stems and- automobile water pumps. This construction permits the combination of two distinctive materials made into one integral packing. The rubber and duck channel not only acts as a wiper, but as a protection to the flax. An added feature is the linen thread stitching which prevents displacement of materials under gland pressure, and overcomes buckling so frequently experienced in un stitched packings of this general type. CONSTRUCTION: Long line best quality flax stitched with strong linen thread into a moulded rubber and duck channel. The double combination of casing and flax makes two pack ings in one against the wearing surface. Supplied lubricated and graphited unless otherwise ordered, in packing space sizes from 1/4" upward. APPLICATION: All hydraulic services from low pressure to extreme heavy duty, hot and cold water. BELMONT SHREDDED METAL with COTTON COVER The feature of this packing is that the cotton jacket, braided over Belmont Lubricated Shredded Metal, holds the packing in shape for easy application without distortion. The cotton jacket wears away in service on the wearing 6ide--the metal ultimately coming in direct contact with the rod or shaft. The packing can be readily taken from the stuffing box, if so desired, as the remaining cotton cover on three sides of each ring tends to prevent the metal from fusing into a solid mass. CONSTRUCTION: Composed of Belmont Lubricated Shredded Metal, with cotton jacket, formed square in cross section in packing space sizes of Vi" and upward. APPLICATION: All temperatures up to 550 degrees Fah renheit. Recommended on rotary shafts against steam, hot or cold water, ammonia, brine and some chemicals. Also used on reciprocating rods and plungers of above mentioned services. Belmont Plastic Packings are combinations of asbestos fibre, soft metals, graphite and special lubricants. Being compara tively soft and pliable, these packings mould themselves under gland pressure into a bearing-like mass to the exact shapes and sizes of stuffing boxes. To assure efficient service, however, shafts and rods must be in good condition and alignment. In applying Belmont Plastic Packings, thoroughly clean the stuffing box, then tamp with the gland as much packing as the box will take, and finally draw firmly on the stud bolts. It is not necessary to remove packing at any time simply add more when gland is drawn up as far as it will go. CONSTRUCTION: Composed of asbestos fibre, particles of soft metal, graphite and lubricants. Various types of metals and lubricants are used to meet the applications mentioned below. These packings are furnished in hulk form put up in cans of 3 pounds and 5 pounds and in coil form as follows: For Packing Spaces Measuring Specify Size Actual Size of Packing ifjg1' or under A round l-'i" to Jjf/ inclusive Vs'to hV W to%" Vi to`%" " 1 " and over B C D E F J-t" x ?'s" * A" x A" VvV 1 " square APPLICATION: The following constructions are appli cable against conditions mentioned. "No binder"--binder omitted 2. "No graphite"--graphite omitted 3. "No binder or graphite"--binder & graphite omitted Belmont Style 3060 Plastic is a "Teflon" packing P4CA/AT0S which should be of particular interest in the chemical industrv against concentrated sulphuric, nitric, hvdrofluoric and chronic acids and all alkalis. The use of the binder lowers the resistance to fluorine, chlorine, bromine, sulphur chloride, sulphur oxy chloride, hvdrogen fluoride, oxygen and concentrated hvdrogen peroxide. These chemicals do not affect pure "Teflon". The binder in Belmont Style 3060 Plastic is required where the packing must respond to delicate gland pressure such as high speed rotary shaft applications. Service can be improved on rotary shafts by the use of "Teflon" spacer rings Vjfi" thick between the rings and at the ends of the sets. It is most important that Belmont 3060 Plastic on high speed shafts should show a slight leakage, otherwise destructive seizure of the packing will result.
