The protection provided by thtese filters and respirators has in no- way changed. Currently NIOSH will still approve these types of filters and respirators for protection against asbestos; however, Willson has taken the above action because we feel that the R12 high efficiency filter, the only remaining filter approved for asbestos, provides the highest degree of protection available in an air purifying filter. n its April 10, 1984 proposed rule for asbestos, OSHA is con sidering requiring the use of high efficiency filters in applications where air purifying respirators can be used. OSHA notes that at both proposal levels (0.2 fibers/cc and 0.5 fibers/ cc) the NIOSH/MSHA certification criteria appears to require the use of high efficiency filters. The R10, Rll, R13 filters, and the 1410 disposable respirators are not high efficiency filters, when OSHA lowers the PEL, the certification of other than high efficiency filters becomes questionable. Using a conversion factor* the Time Weighted Average (TWA) of 0.5 f/cc equates to*"* 0.015 mg/m3, well below the cut-off of 0.50 mg/m3 for other them high efficiency filters as stated in 30 CFR Part II. A TWA of 0.2 f/cc equates to 0.006 mg/m3. What the above actually means is that the legislation is moving towards requiring the use of high efficiency filters where air borne asbestos is present and air purifying respirators are appropriate. Although this is not law yet, Willson Safety Products agrees with the intent of using only high efficiency filters for asbestos in these situations, and has taken steps to modify its product line appropriately to achieve this philosophy.
