Panel of Experts to evolveand recommend A.C.S. position on exposures to Vinyl Chloride Monomer At the American Chemical Society Committee on Chemical Safety meeting held at Los Angeles, April 1, 1974, a formal request was received from Dr. Quigley of the A.C.S. Executive Office for comments as noted in the April 1 letter attached. The Committee on Chemical Safety, while recognizing both the serious nature and urgency of the request, noted unanimously to assemble a small ad hoc panel of experts from within the A.C.S. who had specific knowledge and experience to help formulate the A.C.S. position requested by Dr. Quigley. Subsequently, the Federal Register for April 5 lowered the TLV of VCM to a ceiling of 50 ppm, and noted that a permanent value would be established shortly. Under date of April 15, Dr. Quigley wrote further (enclosed) concerning the task. Dr. V. C. Brum, who has graciously agreed to chair this ad hoc panel, has asked me to invite you, or someone from your group who has specific knowledge of VCM (obviously including but not restricted to the angio sarcoma problem), to a one-day meeting which is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday, May 21, at the American Chemical Society Building, 1155 16th St., Washington, D.C. At this meeting, the specific scientific facts will be reviewed (including the detailed reports which the New York Academy of Sciences will review at their May 10-11 meeting on VCM, PVC and related substances), and an attempt will be made to draft a 6ENC 009506 statement for submission to Dr. Quigley, as he requested. Unfortunately, no funds have been made available for this meeting, so we must ask participants' to defray their own expenses for travel and lodging. Lunch will be served as part of the meeting. No attempt will be made to restrict scientific objectivity or complete factual data, however, which, of course, is the prime purpose of the meeting.
