A 3-inch steam line and two 3-inch product lines were stripped from the river to the top of the river bank and the risers across the road was stripped. Glove bags and enclosures were not used because it was not feasible according to the construction department and the 512 Plant Industrial Hygiene department. Employees used a powered man-basket to reach lines that were overhead. All personal exposure samples were below the 2.0 fiber/cc level which permits the use of half-face HEPA cartridge respirators while employees are being monitored per 0SHA asbestos standard 29CFR 1926.58. One personal exposure sample exceeded the 0.2 fiber/cc permissible exposure level standard and four exceeded the 0.1 fiber/cc action level standard. Exposure monitoring may not be required in some instances where supplied air respirators in a positive pressure mode are being used while stripping and removing asbestos insulation. We encourage you to use supplied air respirators as much as possible in the asbestos abatement procedures. Employees wore no street clothes, two pair of coveralls, headcovers, boots, gloves and A0 R57-A half-face HEPA cartridge respirators.
