W. Fritts, H. E. Bonds and Dr. V. H. Barbour. Old Business: Personal hygiene of Chlor-Alkali employees improved. A practice of rotating six of the eighteen cell service men and cell service helpers out of the cell area for one week each four weeks is being continued. Concentrations of mercury in atmosphere increased when new blowers were installed. It is believed that the cause is related to leakage in mercury pumps located directly below the blowers. An effort is being made to engineer out leakage in pumps and mercury handling system. This includes a 1-cell pilot installation with improved design of mercury system. An air washer will be installed on one fan. Covers are being replaced on pump tanks. Proper ventilation may require opening up side of building. A i meeting is being planned with Pittsburgh personnel in May on Chlor-Alkali environmental problems. It was noted that two Chlor-Alkali plants in Great Lakes area had been shut down temporarily due to mercury contamination of adjacent waters. Renovation of Chlor-Alkali washroom has been satisfactorily completed. The lunch room is. now being redesigned. Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company has submitted an activated alumina filter mask with a rigid frame which is more promising them some earlier masks tried. Additional masks of this type have been requested for experimental use in potrooms. Commercial Contracting Company is progressing satisfactorily in cleaning and repairing monitor catwalks in first three potlines. Covered garbage cans have been installed in lunch rooms in Buildings A-325, R-35 and R-136. Sanitary conditions have improved. New Business! The program of determining fluoride levels in urine is being expanded to include about 50 employees in Cryolite and Aluminum Fluoride Plants. Improved practices for use of Varsol for cleaning equipment in machine shop are being developed. Recent safety and hygiene inspections show that in general sanitation in restrooms is good. It was mentioned that there was a need for a good plant-wide scrap' cleanup. Managers are responsible for follow-up on safety and hygiene inspection reports.
