Capuro, P.L Viola and A. Bizotti. Regina Elena Institute for Cancer Research, Rome, Italy. Paper received; 10th May, 1974: amended 22nd July, 1974. 00QQ"5# R&S 106343 r?r/ In the past four years we have demonstrated (1,2) that rats exposed to a flow of air containing 30 000 p.p.m. (part per million) of vinyl chloride develop cutaneous tumors in 70"c of cases, ljng carcinomas in 20 ? of cases and. less TuNo /. It is worth emphasizing that even using lower concentrations, it was possible to confirm the oncogenicity of vinyl chloride which, under the experimental conditions employed, is to be con sidered a very hazardous compound and one of the most powerful carcinogens. \ C.T-rr:- h" _ - 0 C30 ocoo _ - * r tt;: .r-!ii; c-Jin-:! * Hie n -t cspoied to i C, *rre kept under the tame L\>nJi:ions for IS m;fti rjVf.* i j' r -- 10 io t 'XM.i'c/fec' .-rlr.njp ir r.r'v.f, P'C tu**tort appeared .V**vc**r * itnd If w-'tirr ' ' i \-y "ir n pcs T-TL t' v-'ar r*'::-cnr ,7 P* Sn-.o acar;rt>r\a L-TM.' iJc^-V^rcmona 1C -0 (' -3 ?? < 0.0005 li r. ; -i* 0 CO * V; * ri.-a-.-_.;, . In a limited number of experiments utilizing other types of animals the appearance of tumors similar to those described in the rats was observed. These data, collected in table 2. indicate in particular that the rabbit, which is no: very susceptible to chemical carcinogens, displays high sensitivity to vinyl chloride. Even in this case, at the concentration of 10 000 p.p.m.. the hisiotypes reflect those obtained in ihe rats. We car. conclude that the carcinogenic el tec; ol vinyl chloride has been clearly confirmed by the present results, which also indicate that almost all tissues and organs are sensitive to ihis. carcinogen. 1. \ icla.
