Thanks very much for your letters of July 28, August 1, 2, and 12. I have nov returned to my desk and I shall be prepared to carry on my assignment as chairman of the Program Committee. First, with respect to the Donald E. Cummings Memorial Lecture, I shall inform you as well as the Program Committee of the recommendations that come to me. So far I have had one cr two suggestions. The Program Committee, as you have constituted it, is quite satisfactory to me. I shall proceed promptly to get in touch with the members, and ve shall try to develop our program in the interests of our own society and in collaboration so far as possible, with the Program Committee of the A.A.I.P. and S. I shall certainly do my best to try to set these programs up in supplementary rather than in competitive fashion. As you are aware no doubt, I am pleased that ve shall be able to join with the A.A.I.P. and S. this year. I have misgivings about it, and I share completely the opinions of Manfred Bowditch, Phil Drinker, and yourself and others concerning the difficulties. I have written Bovditch, telling him I agree with him, but pointing out why it seems to be advisable to try once more at least to compose the difficulties. I shall have an opportunity this year to see what I can do in that connection. No doubt I will be very much influenced as to future possibilities by what I am able to accomplish. I am not misled I think, by either optomism or by any vish to be politic. I feel very strongly the desirability of joint activity on the part of these two organisations if ve can come to see eye to eye. I believe that many members of the Board of Directors and of the general organization of A .A.I.?, and S. vill look at this matter much as ve do. I am afraid that at the present time there is a little too much tendency to allov policy to be made in the course of vhat should be merely incidental business negotiations. I believe this can be corrected, but I share your feeling that if it cannot be corrected, it vill be impossible for the tvo organi zations to go along together. I shall do my best to get the ,Mr. J.
