Whenever asbestos con taminated equipment is removed, special precautions must be taken to prevent employee exposure to asbestos dust. Prior to each removal or demolition job, the project should be reviewed for potential asbestos hazards. If asbestoscontaining insulation is suspected, a golf-ball size sample should be delivered to the South Plant Laboratory for analysis. If test results are positive for asbestos, the control measures on the reverse side must be taken. These measures are based on specific legal requirements and good industrial health practice. As a precaution, all thermal: insulation of unknown composition' should be treated as asbestos until proven otherwise. EMPLOYEE NOTIFICATION: Employees must be advised that the material is asbestos and given an explanation of the potential harmful effects of over exposure, (e.g., over exposure to asbestos fibers can cause permanent lung damage called asbestosis; over exposure also increases the risk of getting lung cancer.) The hygiene department can assist in this discussion. PERSONAL PROTECTION; Employees must lose dust masks (3M8710, Stock No. 220-650-8710 or equivalent) and disposable coveralls (Stock No. 220-262-0050). Coveralls are required to prevent any asbestos dust from being carried home. REMOVAL AND CLEANUP: The work area should be marked off and the spread of material limited as much as possible. Asbestos material must be wetted prior to removal to limit dusting. Cleanup must be done by wet sweeping or vacuuming. If vacuumed, the machine must be specially equipped for asbestos dust. Dry sweeping of asbestos is strictly prohibited! DISPOSAL: All asbestos material and asbestos-contaminated clothing must be placed in lined containers, sealed, labeled i and transported to the South Plant.
