rf(CCr fot-H -5- Corporate Environmental Lab - P. H. Zakriski The latex waste from the Avon Lake General Chemical plant is the subject of an inquiry from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Their Interest deals specifically with the composition of a laboratory simulated leachate from the wastes as they enter the landfill sites. The Environmental Lab has completed a lengthy study involving the preparation of leachates from the waste in addition to other components of the landfill scrap. (The waste is a composite of BFG latex scrap and automobile shreddings from the Cleveland area.) The leachates were tested for mercury, silver, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, zinc, selenium, arsenic, chloride, sulfate, nitrate, dissolved solids and acrylonitrile. According to the criteria published by the U.S. EPA, the leachate from this latex composite is acceptable for landfill disposal. However, the final judgement on the issue will come from the Ohio EPA in September. Our sampling and analysis of the Akron Cure-Rite 18 process continued this month. Tests were performed for methanol, morpholine, methylene chloride and carbon disulfide in the atmospheric and water discharges. The water discharges were also tested for Cure-Rite 18. Work is continuing in an effort to complete the profile of the discharge for each of these chemicals. The vinyl chloride compensating field monitor has been installed on the property of the Avon Lake General Chemical plant. It is in operation now in a shakedown and preparation mode before we install it for a more or less permanent role on the roof of the Avon Lake Municipal building. Operations to this point are successful and we expect to complete our shakedown by mid September. Construction in the Molecular Biology Laboratory is in an accelerated phase. The ventilation and air conditioning system is being installed. This system is the largest project of the construction. The air conditioning and ventilation system is expected to be completed by the end of September. The plant lab visits for purposes of OSHA test method review are in full swing. > Three plant labs were visited this month: Avon Lake General Chemical, Akron General Chemical and Louisville.
