A t o t a l o f 268 Chem ical D iv is io n employees p a r tic ip a te d in the 1981 e v a lu a tio n . Of th ese 192 or 72 were considered to be normal or free o f "sig n ifica n t" abnorm alities. A "s ig n ifica n t" ab n orm ality is considered to be a fin d in g th a t l i e s o u tsid e o f th e normal range in excess o f one standard d e v ia tio n .
Of th e " s i g n i f i c a n t " ab n orm alities the fo llo w in g may be o f s p e c ia l in terest.
32 employees or 12^ had blood pressure e le v a tio n s in excess o f 150/95. l 6 employees or 6% had c h o le s tr o l e le v a tio n s in excess o f 325 m illigram s. U in d iv id u a ls o r 1. 5 had electro card io g ram s which were abnormal. 3 in d iv id u a ls had abnormal chest x - r a y s .

These d iffe r e n c e s , however, have a h igh degree o f v a r i a b i l i t y and may be due to a number o f fa c to r s such as incomplete fa s t in g , d ie t , ro ta tin g s h i f t s , e tc .

This s l i g h t l y exceeds the n a tio n a l average o f 38^ fo r male smokers over age 19 and o f 30^ f o r fem ales over 19* The fe d e ra l governm ent's goals on smoking are to reduce t h is fig u r e to 25% hy 1990 in both male and fem ale. You may wish to a v a il y o u rse lv e s o f some lit e r a t u r e on smoking to encourage no smoking programs.
