WGM Safety Corp./Granet ISEA Counsel ISEA President The meeting was called to order at 8:00 A.M. by Chairman Don Schmidt. Mr. Ken Laidley of SAFECO Manufacturing and Mr. Jeff Moore of Standard Safety were introduced as being new to the group. On motion, duly seconded and carried, the Minutes of the previous meeting, November 19, 1981, were approved as presented. Mr. Dick Sager reported on the ASTM F23.80 Protective Clothing Materials for Exposure to Molten Substances Committee. He reported that a standard has been drafted but there still exists a- need for a standard for the molten metal pour test. Two weeks prior, a subcommittee of F23.80 met for three days of pour testing in an effort to set the necessary parameters. DKS 158 2- - Mr. Sager, also, commented on the current status of asbestos as it applies to our industry. He concluded that in his opinion, asbestos will be leaving the market relatively soon. Mr..Don Schmidt reported that the chemical portion of ASTM F23 now has a permeation .standard and is currently working on a penetration standard. Mr. James Gauerke reported on the NFPA fireman's clothing committee. The committee would be meeting December 8, 1982 in Boston to finalize a firefighter's' protective glove standard. Mr. Gauerke offered'to make copies of the proposed standard available to anyone wishing to make comments. Mr. Jack Casey reported on foreign competition and the recent Work Glove Manufacturers Association meeting. - Caribbean Basin Initiative (duty free entrv to the U.S.) -- no action by Congress - 20% residual tarriff -- no action - Generalized System of Preferences (coated fabrics w/no tarriff -- no action expected before March of 1983 Mr. Don Schmidt introduced the idea of dividing into smaller groups and Mr. Bob Thomas suggested this may, indeed, be a way of getting more accomplished. Further discussions of the objectives and purposes were referred to new and unfinished business. Mr. Jim Gauerke, Fyrepel Products, Inc., was introduced by Mr. Don Schmidt as the new Group Chairman. Mr. Gauerke did insist that, as his first official ruling, there would be "NO BALDHEADED JOKES" this year. The concepts of smaller groups and future directions were continued under new and unfinished business. Mr. Ron Ladick suggested we review the scope and objectives of SWAG. Other suggestions presented by the group were: - Material seminars by manufacturers - Study of market shifts - Investigate product liability concerns common to the group - User education and understanding -- develop a universal method of presentation of educational materials - Put together a seminar for the National Safetv Congress for the purpose of educating the end user - Questionnaires to industry asking for what they might need DfCS 155 -3It was further suggested that projects of this nature might entice prospective members to join SWAG.
