CC: c. F. Reinhardt-CR&D-Haskell Lab. J. R. Martin-ER-S&F-BOD-1442 J. K. Addison-Construction January 12, 1983 TO: E. N. HELMERS - ESD k<ii> FROM: INGO ZEISE/H dONSTRUCTIOH- RESPIRATORY PROTECTION There has been quite a bit of correspondence questioning the effectiveness of air purifying dust, fume, and mist respirators beginning with a notice from NIOSH dated 8/25/80, a letter from Norton Co. dated 5/22/81, and finally a letter from S. W. Dixon of Haskell Lab. for the Industrial Hygiene Subcommittee dated 10/13/82. The Construction Division was first aware of the problem after Dixon's letter was distributed to the Engineering Department's Safety and Health Committee. Since we consult with the various construction contractors around the country regarding personal protective equipment and, in many instances, furnish it, we feel that such information is important to us. Upon requesting Dixon to put our office on the distribution for similar warnings we were advised that "Haskell operates by committee" and all depart ments are represented on these committees; he offered your name for Engineering. Please do whatever is necessary to provide information regarding questionable equipment so that we may advise the construction sites. There is a certain liability exposure to Du Pont should we provide inferior equipment. Thanks for your help. IZ:drt aU* 09137ss SC-DP-07610
