OSHA - BRIEF UPDATE ON: a) ASBESTOS Jon Haas reported on the lowering of the OSHA asbestos limit from two fibers per cc to one half fiber per cc. Since the bra type (3M mask) respirator is good for only ten times the TLV it can be used only to five fibers per cc. Since normal dismantling procedures will expose workers to 18 to 20 fibers per cc, these masks are no longer adequate protection. About the only practical choices in respirators now will be air supply respirators or air purifying respirators. Whereas practically anyone can wear the bra type respirator the physician will now have to determine whether persons working with asbestos are able to wear the air supply or air purifying respirators. Dr. Smith indicated he has 117 employees who his records indicate cannot wear respirators. He is in the process of re-examining these individuals to determine if that is still the case. After much discussion it was agreed that an asymptomatic employee with right bundle branch block would not be precluded from wearing a respirator. A long discussion then followed relative to who should 8should not be allowed to wear a respirator. The concensus that was finally reached was that if the em ployee will not be placed at an increased risk by having to wear a respirator then he should be allowed to do so. b) NOISE Jon indicated that we are still waiting for a final noise standard. He indicated that he feels that the final eight hour TWA is likely to be 85dBA. Dr. Ryan said that he feels that it is more likely to be 90dBA. Another of the major points still being debated is whether or not engineering con trols are going to be required or if hearing protection will be an acceptable means of controlling noise exposure. c) LEAD Jon reported the final lead standard is expected in early 1978. Dr. Ryan indicated that the standard will probably specify blood lead level limits of 80 micrograms per 100 milliliters of blood for males, 60 for females, and 40 for females in the child-bearing age. However, it was pointed out that the standard is for in-organic lead only. Tetraethyl lead, the lead primarily used in Sun's operations, is organic
