Competitive House Paints - Chalking Type
(NT24C>b9HC2b2)
""
Contributors: W. Green, J. Davis, J. Southwick
Summary:
An evaluation of competitive house paints has been started. Exposures have been made in Cleveland, New Orleans and
Baltimore. This report covers the initial performance of these paints.
The following table lists the properties and general analysis of the paints tested. Correlation between visual
hiding and actual TiOg content is good, Dutch Boys actual hiding is higher than its TiOp indicates because of large amounts of lead pigment. Pittsburgh rates higher because part of its Ti02 is present as titanium calcium. Master Mix rates lower than its TiOp content predicts because of poor despersion. None of these paints show any great brush ing advantage. This may be attributed to the small areas used in testing these paints.

Spred Lustre (NT23048AD2b3, NT23053AD268)
Contributors: J. Bednarik, J. Southwick
Summary:
Spred Lustre Reformulation
Work on a Spred Lustre reformulation is progressing rapidly on several systems.
Spred Lustre Colors and Dramatone Bases
C-LD012944
A system of V-891 and V-863/V-869 modified with 0-315 for
lapping is fairly well established. The formulation offers high vehicle solids (42-44$), lower TiOp content due to re duced flocculation, and good brushing-flow control due to the use of Thixcin and Cowles production. Work has in
cluded the formulation of a pre-dispersion Thixcin base for plants that cannot control dispersion temperature to a
maximum 125-130F, Final formulation for gloss and flow is all that remains to be done.
Spred Lustre White
Due to the yellowing of the above system a separate formu lation is being developed for Spred Lustre Super White
Y-4600. Basic quality will be V-863, possibly modified
with a flat wall vehicle (ADM 3113-P-30 or Glidden manu factured replacement for V-892) for self-sealing. Increas ed non-yellowing will be obtained through the use of W-128 Zinc Oxide. More work is required on this formulation
than on the system for the colors and dramatone bases but . a definite start has been made on a final quality formula
tion.

Ready Mixed Exterior Glid-Tone Stain
(NT2'5'0T4Wl'b'61------------- !------------------------
Contributors: J. Davis, J. Southwick
Summary:
The Sales Dept, has suggested there may be a need for a few ready mixed colors containing our EGL-64305. This material would be a complete hiding, uniform, thixotropic
type stain used primarily for shingles.
Discussion:
Preliminary work has been started to formulate four ready mixed colors using our EGL-64305 as a portion of the vehicle. The Other portion of the vehicle will be alkyd. We will formulate, to achieve a thixotropic body for mini mum drip and splash which will give the vest possible application properties. Experiments on a brown have start ed and at this point looks promising.
Work will continue and exposure teBts will be made when satisfactory formulations are achieved.
