The letter discloses some information which has only recently cane to light. Specifically, that recent I tests have found trace amounts of .^dioxinsin our product. 1 'f ">1* These low levels are not considered to pose any additional health I .risk when Tetrathal is handled properly. The amounts found are in the parts per billion range. The customer letter outlines seme 1 j of the details. 1 We are disclosing this information to everyone who has contact i with Tetrathal not because of the risk or hazard involved but 1 rather because of the publicity which has followed the dioxin 1 issue. In addition, as you know, Mr. Mahoney feels very strongly that we have a responsibility to fully disclose any information we have concerning the satety of our products. 1 You should be aware that the particular dioxin isomer which has created all the controversy is the 2, 3, 7, 8 isomer. We have found none of this isomer in Tetrathal. I iI The message to our customers should be clear. That is, we have 1 found trace amounts of dioxin in Tetrathal. However, by following the handling precautions on the MSDS there is no additional i health risk to anyone who may ccme in contact with it. ' Further, we plan no changes in the way in which we market the product or the emphasis that we place behind it. Tetrathal continues to be i a viable conmercial product for Monsanto. i Clearly, your customers may have further questions about this issue. This communication details new information we have recently uncovered about a small amount of dioxin in Tetrathal. Our experts agree that the amount and composition of the dioxin I j does not pose a health risk. We are, however, making our findings , j public due to the publicity that has followed the dioxin issue. I ! Since each of you has a different set of circumstances in your i j world area, I would suggest that you make the information avail- I able to your customers in your own way. That is, we ; have found trace amounts of some dioxin isomers in Tetrathal. | These are not the isomers which have been getting all the publicity and in fact, we believe that their existance is not cause for con- i cern as long as the information contained in our standard MSDS is | followed. In addition, we will continue to market Tetrathal in ; the manner we have in the past. | Ex-US sales represent two-thirds of all Tetrathal volume.
