Slager^ A. E. Withrow N. F. Wood W. F. Zimmermann OLD BUSINESS 1. Hourly Safety Committee Recommendations A. One hundred sixty tool boxes have been inspected and the remainder should be inspected by the end of October. It was found that in those boxes which had more tools than they should contain, some of the tools were in need of replacement and the boxes are not kept as clean as they should be. Mr. Wood plans to put this inspection on a more regular schedule, probably once a year. B. A survey has been made of the plant lighting. The lighting in the styrene plant area is adequate. Five locations need additional lighting; these areas are generally In the southwest portion of the plant. 2. Supervisors Safety Meeting Mr. Winkle, chairman of the committee, reported that his com mittee had given 27 meetings during the week of October 5. This program consisted of a skit based on past fire and spill investigation reports, and a film entitled "Fire at Signal Hill." Ha reported that 95# of the supervisor 86# of the maintenance and 6l# of all other personnel attended this program. He also reported a grand total of 1258, or 78#, in attendance. A committee for the next supervisors safety meeting was selected. The members are Messrs. R. F. Kaeble, Ed Crow and C. W. Warren. SC 16817 LAM024116 MINUTES SAFETY buARD 3. National Safety Congress Four supervisors will attend the National Safety Congress In Chicago during the week of October 19. They are Messrs. J. J. Hickey, W. C. Fuller, Archie Wilcox and Tony Ozarchuk. 4. Three Million Safe Manhours The methods to be used for the observance of the 3*000,000 safe manhour mark were discussed. It was agreed that an ad In the local paper will be used to congratulate our employees publicly and to bring our safety performance accomplishments In front of the community. Also, we will use a calendar, posted on the safety bulletin boards, and mark off the days as we approach the 3*000,000 mark. Other Ideas were either rejected or tabled for future discussion. 5. Major Safety Projects A review of the status of the potable water line and critical eye bath and shower alarms was presented. The nitrogen system report was discussed briefly and assigned to Messrs. Rotzler, Browning and Gilmore for study, and their recommendations will be presented at the next Board meeting. 6. Chief Operator and Leadmen Training The pilot group In plant engineering has already begun work on developing a training plan for leadmen. Work-will begin soon for a similar pilot group for chief operator training In departments 17, 18 and 31. NEW BUSINESS 1. Hourly Safety Committee This Committee requested consideration of two items. A. A review of the use of liquid oxygen In areas where per sonnel may not be fully aware of the hazards. The specific Incident quoted was In department 41. This has been as signed to Messrs. Slager and Rotzler. B. The failure of the lock out on a rocker type pump switch prompted a request to review the design of this particular switch type. The incident quoted was a chse In power 3. The Board felt that this incident would not have occurred had the procedure for locking out been followed. Because all of the facts were not available, this was referred to Mr. Wood for review. The training programs planned for members of the fire orew, operating personnel and other departments (depart ments requesting special fire training) were presented and accepted. 3. Safety Suggestions As required by the Board, the Safety Department presented listings and evaluations of the third quarter safety suggestions. Of the 35 suggestions submitted, three were considered to have sufficient merit to be reviewed by the superintendent of the suggestor for possible commendations. These three will be typed up and sent to the proper superintendents. 4. Accident Analysis Report This report is prepared monthly by the safety department for distribution to superintendents and general operating super visor level. In most cases, the supervisor performing the investigation of a reported minor injury does not see the monthly analysis unless the report 1b passed down from the superintendent or general operating supervisor.
