Allen 8868 - REPORT ON FACTORY OPERATIONS: \ Orders for heavy liquids amounted to 204,000\gallons as compared with production of 171,000 gallons. Shipments totaled 239,000 with a resulting decrease in in ventory of 63,000 gallons. ] Factories operated 40 hours a week on the average. Sales for the week were 7.35$ ahead of last year with gains in all captions except insecticides. Hills reported that the state of North Dakota rating on Martin-Sonour house paint was apparently on a special formula manufactured for the Bank of North Dakota rather than on "Monarch" house paint. He reported further that the North Dakota law does not apparently authorize paint testing although there is a law which calls for testing varnishes. 8871 - STONE HILLS: Hr. Coolidge reported that we have enough seed on hand to operate the linseed oil mill to August 1st. e 8873 - DEHYDRATED CASTOR OIL: Mr. Davis reported that factory consumption of Dchydrol amounted to 135 bbls. last week. Stock of Dchydrol was reduced by shipment of three tank cars to Dovoc and Raynolds. 3874 - NEOFAT: Mr. Davis pointed out to the Board that our contract for Neofat calls for 600#000 pounds which is very much larger than current requirements. New developments have made it relatively far less important. Mr. Davis will sec whether any arrangement can be worked out to relieve us of taking the amount included in the contract.. 8875 - LEAD STOCKS: Mr. Davis reported that stock of pig lead had been incroased somewhat because of a strike in Chicago which necessitated ordering direct from St. Joseph. 8376 - H T S LEAD: Mr. Steudcl advised the Board that the Devoe and Raynolds contract with National Lead terminates August 31st and that we could expect them to buy their rcauirements of H T S lead from us provided we can supply a satisfactory grade. Mr. Coolidge will got a report for next week from Mr. Stevens on how soon we can expect to be producting H T S lead and also an estimate on requirements of pig load for the rest of the fiscal yoar. 0007-SWP-000022083 Mr. Prescott reported that a complete requisition for 'ho changes in the white lead plant is not yet available. 8877 - TIN PLATE: In viev/ of the possible war shortage of tin plate, the Board asked Mr. Davis tc cover for our requirements up until the end of December. If possible shipment is to be deferred until after September first. It was pointed out that work should be done to find a satisfactory substitute for tin plate in the event there is a real shortage. Dr. Van Stone will ask Mr. Bingham to investigate and re port on several possibilities. Mr. Davis will find out what substitutes American and Continental Can Companies have developed. 8878 - EQUIPMENT FOR`NEW RETAIL STORES: In discussing the possibility of reducing the cost of installation of small new stores, it was suggested that in the two man stores the electric water cooler could probably be eliminated. Mr. Prescott will consult with Mr. Krimbill on this suggestion. Mr. Davis reported that a saving of $40.00 has been effected in the cost of store fixtures. 8879 - TRADE SALES LIMES--SHERWIN-WILLIAMS A1Q LOIVE BROTHERS: Dr. Van Stone advised the Board that Sherwin-Williams trade sales lino contains some 36% more items than Lowe Brothers. The relatively compact line no doubt at least partially accounts for the bettor turnover that Lowe Brothers gets as compared vdth the other affiliated companies. A check will be made to sec whoinShcrwin-V.'illiams line is larger and whether it can be reduced. 8880 - STORAGE IN-TRANS IT--RATES ON INSECTICIDES: It was reported that storago-in-transit rates have been obtained for all ware house points from which outgoing shipments as well as incoming shipments are in carload quantities. 8881 - PRICE OF LITHARGE--OAKLAND INSECTICIDES PLANT: Mr. Steudcl pointed out to the Board that the extremely low price of arsenate of lead makes it extremely important for us to get a lower cost than we now have on litharge for our Oakland insecticide plant. > Mr. Davis will consult with Fuller tc sec what reduction can be obtained. 8882 - BUSINESS CONDITIONSt Mr. Steudcl advised the Board that in vie:; of the extremely uncertain business prospects, inventories must be reduced as much as possible before the end of August. 8885 - PAINTER SALESMEN: Mr. Steudcl advised the Board that painter sales territories are being estab lished in a number of metropolitan centers prior to the opening ox retail branches. 0007-SWP-000022084 The cost of operating these territories v;ili fcn carcfv -iy compared with the extra profit from salca which are :aade at substantial]./ over dealer not prices.
