MINUTES of the TECHNICAL Sc RESEARCH COMMITTEE MEETING NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION New York, N, Y. September 17, 1964 Rock Sc Slag Section Glass Section The meeting was called to order at 9:15 A* M. with the following in attendance: W. Gubar K. M. Ritchie T, C. Campbell C. E. Ernst P. L. Losse H. Grant J. M. Barnhart Gustin- Bac on Mfg. Company Baldwin-Ehret-HiU, Ihc* Owens-Coming Fiberglas Corp. Johns-Masville Sales Corp. The Eagle-Picher Company Gustin-Bacon Mfg. Company NIMS THICKNESS TO PREVENT CONDENSATION* 1 2 * 4 5 The Table dated 7/27/64 was discussed. It was noted that there were discrepancies in break points as listed by the various companies. Mr. Barnhart was asked to prepare a table of thicknesses based on "k" values taken from the ASHRAE GUIDE and to use "Minimum Insulation to Prevent Condensation" as a basis of calculation. The design conditions to be 1. 90 F and 90% R H 2. 90F and 80% R H .3. 90F and 70% R H 4. 90F and 60% R H 5. 90F and 50% RH hi order to determine whether a difference in condensation thickness exists between the 3 pcf and 7-1/4 pcf products the calculations will be made separately for both products. . ************ The letter from FHA pertaining to condensation thicknesses was discussed. It was agreed that a "Minimum Thickness to Prevent Condensation" should be used as the basis and a copy will be forwarded to them for their use. 2 STANDARD FACINGS FOR BLANKETS It was agreed that the Table dated 4/28/64 was technically correct. However, the Committee recommends that preconditioning of thematerial should take place prior to ptesting for flame spread and smoke developed. The preconditioning should take place at 100 F and 90% R H for 7 days. A copy of the "Minimum Standard1' dated 9/17/ 64 is attached. PROPOSED FEDERAL SPECIFICATIONS HH-I-00558 and HH-I-005591 2 3 4 5 These specs were discussed and the following agreed to 1. Under Form II materials, Type IV - Blankets, resilient, flexible eliminate the 250F and 500F temperature limits that now appear and substitute one class, namely 350F. GSA will be written to requesting this change, 2. Under Form IH materials, Type VH - Molded - establish 3 classes of materials, 370F, 500F and 1000F, inplace of the existing two classes, A letter ballot will be sent to the Glass Section pertaining to this change, 3. Under Form I materials, Type I, class a, change "k" values to 0, 28, 0. 33 and 0.42 at 100F, 200F and 300F mean temperature, respectively. Add a class c material, 1000F temperature limit with hkn values of 0. 36, 0, 40 and 0, 60 at 200F, 300F and 500F mean temperature, respectively, A compressive strength requirement for class a material of 30 lb/ sq ft under a preload of 2. 5 lb/ sq ft. These changes will be letter balloted to the Committee. 4. In Table IV it will be ascertained by letter ballot whether "k" values for the fine fiber material at 200F mean-temperature of B-l material can be changed to 0,47 and the B-2 material can be changed to 0.43, 5. hi HH-I-00559, a letter ballot will be made to the Committee to ascertain whether a compressive strength of 100 lb/sq ftwder a preload of 0,7 lb/sq in, is acceptable for Form Aimatestel. < \ 3 STANDARD FACINGS FOR PIPE INSULATION This subject was tabled for the present, DUCT ENGINEERING Mr. W, Gubar and H. Marsh are to prepare an initial draft of "Mechanical Design of Duct Systems" for Committee perusal. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. O A y* M 1 tv Ik a >4 J, M.
