Respirator Programs - Medical Examination Requirement In a recent court decision it vas determined that an employee has the right to waive any medieal examination prior to the issuance of a respirator,-as called for in 29 CPR 1910.134(b)* This decision is one further instance of employers being given a responsibility, but not the necessary authority to discharge that responsibility. Guidelines for Control of Asbestos Exposure Mr. Beach reviewed the efforts to date to establish a basis for comprehensive guidelines for controlling employee exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. Two drafts of a System Letter intended to set the policy for the guidelines have resulted in such diverse eoenencs from various departments that a consensus versioo could not be formulated. As a result, Mr. Beach has prepared a third draft chat represents a com pletely different approach to the problem. With the third draft are many attachments chat form the nucleus of a sec of guidelines. Further discussion was devoted to the resolution of. basic issues fundamental to the overall direction the guidelines would take. A sub-group composed of Messrs. Beach, Vilkening, Degen and Dr. Steinmetz was appointed to work on che guidelines further in an attempt to arrive at a consensus position. This sub-group will meet prior to the next OHVG meeting.
