DOCUMENT DESCRIPTION: Industry Sales Info - Calidria Asbestos
ROSCOE S. TAELMAN, Chairman and President of Tallman-McCluskcy Fabrics Company, died December 17, 1968 at age 84. Mr. Tallman was well-known in the Asbestos Industry and had been active in the Asbestos Textile Insti tute for many years.
JUDA DIEN ER, former Vice President of Smith & Kanzler Company, passed away January 5, 1969 at the age of 72. Mr. Diener had been with S&lv until ten years ago, at which time he became a building contractor in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
RA PISTA X I X CO RPQ RA TED describes its vibratory conveyors in Catalog 4300. The new literature shows both coil spring and leaf spring nuxlels for handling a wide variety of bulk materials. Natural frequency and dynamically balanced models for high temperature, sanitary and other special appli cations are illustrated, along with models for conventional bulk handling purposes. .
CAEIDRIA ASBESTOS is described in a new ten-page brochure published by Union Carbide Corporation. A unique and versatile fiber, CAEIDRIA Asbestos has been proven for application as an extender, a thickener, a reinforcer and an opacifier. It is of the Chrysotile variety and is obtained from a short-fiber asbestos deposit in the New Idria area of the Diablo Mountain Range in central California. Union Carbide uses the wet process to produce all CAEIDRIA As bestos products. This process is described as a treatment which breaks down the fiber bundles and removes the rock and other foreign contaminants of the ore body, leaving essen tially pure asbestos. A distinct result of this process is the ability to otter an economic pelletized asbestos product. Ad vantages of this form are: ease of handling, reduced dust,
lower shipping rates, and less troublesome and costly storage. CAEIDRIA Asbestos pellets are J^-inch in diameter by }$inch in length and can be. handled by conventional dry bulk
handling systems.

CALI DR IA A SB ESTO S IX CAR BODIES--'The Fiberfab Division of Yelocidad, Inc., Santa Clara, California, produces custom-body conversion kits containing special panels, fenders, hood and other components made of glass fiber. To make a component, th^ cavity of a female mold is sprayed with a polyester gel coat to a thickness of .025". After the gel coat sets, it is sprayed with the base structure of glass fiber and polyester resin to a nominal thickness of 3/10". The completed component is then removed from the
mold. The gel coat was originally formulated from a polyester
resin, a filler and a viscosity control agent (thixotrope) of colloidal silica. Substitution of a resin-grade asbestos for the
colloidal silica as the thixotrope in the gel coat has resulted in significant cost savings for the manufacturer. The asbestos costs about half as much as silica, has higher yields, gives better batch consistency using less thixotrope and is more readily wetted by the resin without fluffing up. making
spraying quicker and easier. The asbestos used is Union Carbide Corporation's CAL-
IDRIA Isbcstos, Rcsin-Gradc 244. Material cost savings in the range of $10.00 per 800-pound batch are being realized, stability problems are eliminated and viscosity is maintained
during lengthy storage periods. '
GEXLTXE PITSEA L is an emergency gasketing ma
terial that will become semi-plastic with the natural heat gen
erated by the metal surfaces between which it is Used. It is
for use where a flange or a joint is badly pitted, scored or
distorted and when plant down-time is impracticable due to
cost factors or loss of production. The material is composed
of long-strand asbestos fibers which are interwoven with
white alloy wire containing a special imported graphite. It
will take pressures up to 350 psi and temperatures to 450F
and is available in sheet sizes 40" x 40" and 40" x 80" with
Y% ,
and Vio" thicknesses. Free samples of the gasketing
material are available from the .manufacturer, Industrial
Hermetic Materials. Inc., Miami, Florida.
