Julia Balliet 314-268-1890 attachment DSW 136904 STLCOPCB4036864 Carondelet Community Greenspace Funding Proposal The Carondelet Plant is requesting that the Monsanto Fund grant us a $10,000 Sustainability Award to provide a greenspace on an area consumed by the Flood of 1993. This will be an exciting opportunity for the company to rejuvenate and create a park-like setting for a Monsanto property in the Carondelet community of St. Louis. This will both project a positive image for Monsanto while meeting the needs and requests of the community. Project Summary On Tuesday, October 24th, the Carondelet Community Betterment Foundation presented Monsanto with an award that recognizes significant improvements to the appearance of the Carondelet area. This award applauds Monsanto's area support for the 1993 flood cleanup efforts as well as proposed property greenspace improvements. The total size of the area to be improved is approximately one acre. Prior to 1993, this property housed two residential properties and four commercial properties (Figure 1). During the summer of 1993, the River des Peres rose to the 500 year flood stage. Although heroic efforts were made by Monsanto Employees and the Carondelet community to contain the River des Peres, a portion of the levee collapsed. This left a large number of area homes and businesses flooded (Figure 2). Many of the properties submerged during 1993 flood were condemned. Monsanto opted to acquire the properties directly adjacent to the property line as buffer properties. As the acquired buffer property is located within a floodplain, the city of St. Louis restricts the extent and form of future construction done on this property. The Monsanto Carondelet Plant has a close and trusted relationship with the Carondelet Community. Monsanto regularly hosts a Community Advisory Panel which includes a number of Monsanto employees as well as a group of approximately 25 area residents that serve the city in various capacities. This group has been a positive forum to address area resident's concerns with Monsanto operations and has allowed Monsanto to help improve the local community. After numerous communications with the Community Advisory Panel, Monsanto and the community jointly agreed that converting this property into a greenspace will meet our mutual desire to improve the community appearance by "naturalizing" the area. Timeline If funding is approved in third quarter 1996, the plantings should be in place by the end of the year. We place a high value on our excellent relationship with our neighbors and the Carondelet community. This proposal will visually and aesthetically impact the local community while improving Monsanto Company's image in the local community.
