Bonin, Consumer Products Division, informed you of precautions required to avoid a hazard due to inhalation of asbestos fibers. Mr. Bonin's in formation is correct except for his recommendation that informa tion about sampling and analyzing the work room air should be obtained from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The appropriate information and specific assistance you may need are available from UCC medical and industrial hygiene personnel and should be obtained from such persons in preference to in volving the Federal Government. By copy of this letter, I am advising Group I Plants which are canning PRESTONE that the Department of Health, Edu cation and Welfare recommends air sampling for asbestos fiber be done with the membrane filter method The airborne fibers are then counted with a microscope using 430X magnification and phase contrast illumination .
