Portland June 7, 1974 This nemo is in response to your letter dated June 3, 1974 concerning the above subject* X appreciate your concern over the changes in the asbestos caution labels; however, our attorneys are also deeply concerned over recent findings 9 of asbestosis in workers in the construction Industry which is a result of working with joint system products* The new wording for the caution labels is, in compliance with OSHA regulations* The fact that the wording9 "Respirator Protection Required When Sanding" was added will only give us additional protection if any liability threats are made against our products* Our sales effort should not be affected, as the implication of the OSHA wording is to wear a respirator while working with these products anyway* You asked if we as Georgia-Pacific representatives are in a position T) to recommend the type of approved respirators to be used to our customers* X feel we should be prepared to answer and discuss any questions dealing with our products* Xf we can give assistance to our customers as to what types of respirators are approved by OSHA, X see nothing wrong in doing so* I am enclosing a copy of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards / which deals with the subject for your reference if you do not already have a copy* Xf X can be of further assistance in clarifying this matter for you, please contact me* JRH: jb Enclosure \ cc: Messrs J. Ve want these warnings to be Incorporated Into our pall printing die as soon as possible for use on all pails produced for 1 Chicago, Akron and Marietta. On any palls ordered froa you for Acne, ve would not vane this warning to be shown, as their product does not Contain asbestos. .. vX\ These labels are to be located under and in line with Ztea 5 of the "Recommendations for Use" on both sides of the pall. We want the border to reaaln, but it should be brought in on both sides closer to the printing (as per ay codel) in order to line up properly.
