May 30, 1984 MAY MONTHLY REPORT - INDUSTRIAL HYGEINE RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Respiratory fit testing had to be stopped on 5/11/84 because of equipment failure. The instrument had to be returned to the manufacturer, Dynatech Frontier Company, because their repairman was unable to repair it on the site. It is expected to be returned within two weeks. A rough draft of a revision of the respiratory protection program procedure bulletin has been written and is being circulated for comments. This revision reflects the current practice of quantative fit testing. AN-5 A number of personnel working in the south plant of AN-5 had exposures above the 1 ppm action level (highest was 2.5 ppm) in the latest quarterly survey. The higher than normal exposures were traced to a decontamination operation. Plans have been made to have special monitoring during the decontamination phase of the August shutdown. There were five alarmed emergencies - two fires and three spills. No injuries or personnel exposures resulted from these incidents. Industrial Hygiene responded to 38 requests for assistance in addition to routine scheduled monitoring. STOP training was initiated for hourly personnel. /dgb R. T. Hammann y 009503 LAM010715 STG 2436547 FIRE DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT - JANUARY 1984 1. Fire Pumps 710P1-2 the steam turbine driven firewater pump is still out of service. The Engineering Department is looking into making repairs on this turbine or finding a suitable replacement. 710P-9 - the water pump at the fire training ground was taken out of service due to some cracked flanges after the freeze. After disassembling the case, it was found to have small cracks throughout the case and was not repairable. This pump will have to be replaced. 2. Alarmed Emergencies On January 11, 1984, at 2150 hours, there was a fire turned at the NSI unit in Styrene. The deluge system which had just been put back into service after being blocked in because of freeze damage controlled the fire until the fire department arrived to totally extinguish it. On January 12, 1984, at 1310, there was a large spill of styrene at the styrene drum loading rack. The fire crew washed the spill down and stood by while the vacuum trucks picked up the styrene from the sewer system. The all clear was blown at 1326, 16 minutes after the spill alarm had been turned in. On January 16, 1984, a spill of offgas containing CO and tydrogen occurred at the offgas compressor when a 1/2" nipple broke. Water was applied to the vapor cloud by the fire crew to prevent ignition. The alarm was turned in at 1244 and the all clear was at 1322. On January 24, 1984, at 2:24 a.m. a liquid spill containing hydrogen cyanide and AN occurred when a pipe nipple broke off a pump at the quench column in Dept. 51. Vapors from the spill were suppressed by water fog applied by the fire crew. The all clear was blown at 2:38. On January 26, 1984, at2:56 a.m. the fire crew responded to a small fire at the agitator seal on 33T42 tank. This fire spread to some fiberglass siding nearby. The fire was extinguished by the fire crew and department operators. The all clear was blown at 0312. 3. Asbestos Exposure Asbestos insulation lining the walls and roof inside the west firewater pump house was sealed with polyvinyl acetate mastic to eliminate asbestos exposure. 4. Tests were run on a hydrocarbon dispersant/emulsifier, brand name Cold Clean 500. As an emulsifier/dispersant and cleaning agent. Cold Clean 500 did prove satisfactory. As an extinguishing agent, it aided but was inferior to AFFF and other foams in extinguishing the fire. I am stocking 15 gals in the fire station for small hydrocarbon spills. Hamilton SC 009505 LAM010 717 STg 2436549 INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE MONTHLY REPORT - JANUARY 1984 Acetic Acid (Dept. 50) The highest methyl iodide results found in this month's survey of Department 50 personnel was less than 0.2 ppm (vis-a-vis 2 ppm standard). Moreover, the three-year average exposure for this suspected carcinogen is only 0.22 ppm. Carbon monoxide, methanol and noise exposures in the unit continue to be well below the control limits. Requests for IH Assistance We have 38 entries in the logbook this month concerning field requests for Industrial Hygiene assistance.
