Remarks
VAN DYKE BROWNS are vegetable decomposition products similar to humus and peat, containing about 8-15$ mineral ash (ferric oxide, alumina and lime) and up to 30$ moisture. Principal use is in stains.
METALLIC BROWNS are iron oxide pigments made from natural iron ores. They are either ground as received or subjected to heat treatment, ground, and then blended to maintain a standard shade.
`They are controlled for mass color only, as they are usually not adaptable to tinting purposes. Principal usage is in freight car and structural paints.

Remarks
PORE iKLLOW OXIDES are commercially pure hydrated ferric oxide having the ap proximate composition FepOj^HgO. They are produced by precipitation from soluble salts of iron under conditions which permit accurate control of par ticle size and shape.
The lighter shades are suited to the production of cream and ivory tints. Yellow oxides are non-fading and are non-reactive with weak acids or alkalis.
Intermediate shades should be prepared by using both 8280 and 8285. The me dium shade, 8282, was reactivated during shortage, and should be replaced as soon as practicable.
