Whelan Subject: Asbestos At a meeting of the National Health and Safety Committee today, Mr. Eli Kovacich brought the issue of asbestos exposure at St. Louis Plant to our attention. He felt that with extensive renovation and expansion of the plant to meet new production lines, there would be a potential of exposure to asbestos during removal of insulated steam lineB. The age of the plant indicates that asbestos insulation might be present at thiB facility. Now is a good time to initiate identification of steam lines and other asbestos containing materials that might present exposure to demolition crews, pipe ooverers, and other skilled trades. It is recommended that you initiate steps to identify asbestos containing material in the plant. Bulk samples of suspect materials can be analysed in the Industrial Hygiene Laboratory. Dependent upon test results an industrial hygiene asbestos control program oould be initiated in advance of any demolition and construction activity. four assistance and cooperation in this would be appreciated.
