SUBJECT: Surgeon General's Office Lead Warning Signs
April 13, 1956
The Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company, West Spring field, Massachusetts, seat a Purchase Order for 5000 lead warning signs calling for new dimensions which reduced the area of the sign from 42" to 30.8". At the suggestion of Dr. Kehoe, I made a trip to the Surgeon General's Office to obtain approval for use of this new smaller sign. A call was made on Dr. Seward Miller in the Health, Education and Welfare Building, Division of Special Health Services, to discuss this situation. Present also was Mr. Henry N. Doyle, Chief, Occupational Health Program. After reviewing drawings of the original size lead warning signs, measuring 7 " vide and 6" high, Mr. Doyle recalled correspondence early in March from Gilbert & Barker asking approval for the use of these signs. X m s then ' shown a copy of a letter Mr. Doyle wrote to G & B which, in essence, indicated that the new sign met with the provisions of an article intitled, "Changes in Regulations Pertaining to Tetraethyl Lead Gasoline", (Public Health Reports, October 11, 1946 - Page 1488).
In the conversation, both of these gentlemen pointed out that not at any time in the future would they consider reducing the size of this sign to any smaller dimensions. In the course of con versation, Dr. Miller stated that the last time he had met "with the TEL supplier was in 1946 and during the intervening years, there have been one or two points raised such as dye content in gasoline and he thought that it was about time to have another informal con ference with the TEL suppliers to review the situation in general. There were no definite ideas other than the dye suggested b y him. In respect to m y request as to what time of year such a conference would suit their department, Dr. Miller suggested that some time in the Pall would be desirable. He was further advised that I would advise Dr. Kehoe concerning this and that any further arrangements would probably be handled b y Dr. Kehoe.
