A total of 110 of these individuals were examined and 5 refused examination. Of the latter 5, three of these men did have their chests x-rayed but the remaining two did not. There were 9 employees not previously logged on OSHA Form 200 who have now been given a diagnosis of asbestosis. Their names and payroll numbers are listed on the attached page. D, - 469-33189 *This employee's medical record 1 called to your attention several days ago. This employee claimed that he worked in the power house where it was extremely dusty. I attempted to explain to Mr. Myers that since 1973 Union Carbide obeyed the OSHA Standard for asbestos 100%; in that the regulations call for wetting down old insulation, roping off the area, insisting that employees stripping old insulation off pipes wear dust respirators and protective clothing. It was hard for me to believe that after 6 years on Union Carbide's payroll he developed asbestosis as a result of working at Union Carbide. Furthermore, I called Mr, Myers' attention to the fact that the work history completed on him when he was an applicant indicated that he had had exposure to insulation which he alleged was fiberglass while working for several different contractors. Mr. Myers' retort was, "If I have asbestosis, I got it from working at Carbide." UCC 017056 UC-3403 L. R. Noble -2- 21 May 81 Again, it is most difficult for me to understand how Mr. Myers developed asbestosis at Carbide after only a few years exposure, particularly if his supervision insisted that he follow the regulations in the Standard. Incidentally, I still have not received the industrial hygiene sampling results that you informed me would be forthcoming from Mr. Peele.
