Regan - Hooksett Mr. Scheffler's letter of December 26, concerning the above subject, indicates1 that the asbestos dust concentration in the vicinity of I Hoolcsett^s braiders exceeds the threshold limit values of the Ameri can Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. He recommends improvement of the exhaust ventilation on the braiding machines. It seems to me that this approach is preferable to enforcement of the use of respirators with all of its attendent problems. Please note paragraph 127, "Methods of Control" in the attached Indus trial Data Sheet 531, "Dust Fumes and Mists in Industry"'. Under 128 (d) , "Keeping materials moist may be a practical means of control, etc". Can humidity control help in keeping the asbestos fibers from flying? Can any other wetting agents be used? Water soluble silicones? I would appreciate Mr. Regan keeping me informed on the ultimate outcome of this matter.
