Industrial Safety Equipment Association June 19, I98O BULLETIN NO. 80-SW-6 TO THE SAFETY WEARING APPAREL GROUP: FURTHER INFORMATION ON ASBESTOS WORKSHOP Enclosed for your further information is the Preliminary,Agenda for the "Work shop on Substitutes for Asbestos" to be conducted by the Environmental Pro tection Agency and the Consumer Product Safety Commission at the Sheraton National Hotel, Arlington, Virginia on July 14 - 16. You will note from the enclosures that the first d.ay and one half of workshop will deal with the technical -and economic effects of asbestos substitutes for specific product categories. The afternoon of July 15th and on July loth, the health effects of fibrous and non-fibrous types of substitutes will be discussed. Several members of SWAG have expressed interest in attending this workshop, and also participating in the ASM meeting on July l6th in Philadelphia re garding protective clothing for workers exposed to molten metals. It appears the asbestos seminar will hold the greatest interest to ISEA members on July l4th and 15th, and, therefore, it will be possible for members to participate in both of these events. enclosure /me 1901 N. Moore Street, Arlington, VA 22209 (703) 525-1695 rvK.q 7or Workshop on Substitutes The Environmental Protection' Agency (EPA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are planning a national, three day workshop in.order to gather data on'substitutes for asbestos". The workshop will be divided into two parts; the first dealing with economic- and technical aspects of substitutes for asbestos, and the second part dealing with health aspects of substitutes for asbestos. The workshop will be structured so that participants may choose to attend just the technical/economic portion or just the health portion of the workshop if they wish.. The participants are expected to be from primarily industry and academia, although representatives of environmental groups will also be invited to attend the workshop. The workshop.is scheduled for the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, Virginia on July 14-16, 1980. At the outset of the workshop, overview talks on regulatory, technical and economic aspects of substitutes will be given. These talks will include subjects such as -the regulatory status of asbestos, factors affecting speed of technological^innovation, and problems of market definition. The main body of the technical/economic portion of the workshop will consist of talks on substitutes for the approximately-ten asbestos products categories, followed by discussion' sessions. Particularly important issues and questions that should be considered in these discussions will be outlined .in background documents developed by our office and provided to'each . participant. The second portion of the workshop will focus on health effects of both fibrous and nonfibrous types of- substitutes. An overview talk on routes of exposure will be given, followed by talks on epidemiological and experimental studies that have been made on the various substances that can be used as substitutes for asbestos. Discussion sessions will be included on the agenda. We also plan a session in which manufacturers of available substitutes would inform us about the characteristics of their products.
